i finally sent coins out to ngc. the main reason was for my 1857 flying eagle that has had mixed reviews on here. but since i had the 5 free gradings i sent 5 total i figure people like doing the guessing game so here goes

please pardon the reverse dime photo i could not figure out how to delete it. and i am also sorry for the mediocre photography. the flying eagle is the only one i am curious about, the quarter and two dollars i wanted to see how my grading is and the large cent might get flipped on ebay and certified always brings more

well i got the grades online tonight if anybody would like to guess what ngc graded them. i know they are not the most expensive coins but i wanted to send them in for an education, and my thoughts on their grades was close to what they graded, so i am very happy.

I still say MS63 on the eagle (I may overgrade a bit but that coin rates it)

i still do not believe the FE was cleaned, eventually i'll send it back for another shot. overall i am happy
i knew the quarter was a solid xf 45 but on a good day might hit the au 50. got lucky on that one. i thought the morgan was going to be a 58/60, peace 60/61. and why do you think they wouldnt slab the large cent? i was aiming for a 1 or 2, details or not didnt care

I had a 1793 chain cent in about the same condition and after getting a similar response, I realized that there was edge damage (someone removed a tiny amount of copper at some point in the past). I assumed that was the reason -- I suppose it could be that counterfeiters have an easier job just doing one side of the coin (not suggesting that yours is counterfeit) and selling it for a reasonable profit, so NGC is trying to be certain about coins by seeing diagnostics on both sides of old Large cents?

Personally I would have given it AG-details- env. damage. I'm guessing the reason they considered it ungradeable is it lacks enough detail to determine whether or not it's genuine. I don't think it's fake but I suppose it's hard to tell and they decided to err on the side of caution.

yeah on the reverse of it you can barely see the left wide of the wreath, thats basically it. i only wanted it slabbed because they bring more on the ol' ebay that way. but i guess its going to go on raw now
