What is about certain is that would we be able to make one coin from the qualities of yours and mine, it would be a stunner Q
So those two are the best coins of her? Or just that specific type (mint, etc.)? Can I ask approximately how much they are worth? She is not particularly rare either correct? Or am I wrong. The ability to have the best or arguably the best example of something at not a prohibitive cost just boggles my mind. Ancients are the best.
Oh there is probably better examples of her but this is friendly competition on another site. People upload their coins they feel is better then the other examples of the same type and members vote using the gallery software. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=111 And Maesa is VERY common. As for value, they are only worth what someone will pay. One day they can be worth $80 and the next sale its $18, never know with ancients.
OK cool. The point still remains how you can get something fairly unique that at one point had monetary value and don't have to spend thousands of dollars to get it. That has to be pretty rare across collecting niches.
Yup, sometimes $18 is the going rate, (if you buy 6 coins at a time that is.) Man, I think I will pay the $50 and going to CICF professional preview day, lol. I lie awake at night thinking what was in that magically box I missed.
That is a cool thing about ancients. It's not too hard to find unique coins. Actually, if kinda hard (and fun) to find coins from the same die/dies.
...and even when you do find coins that are from the same dies, they can be quite different in terms of how they were struck and conserved. It is not just a matter of wear like it tends to be on machine made coins. The image below shows pairs of coins from the same dies. Some people say it is silly to collect them. That's OK. Don't. There are as many ways to collect ancients as there are people who care to think rather than read instructions in some book.
Forgive me for putting a modern US coin in the World and Ancient coins forum, but I just had to post this.
Nice one Matt, I found a denarius recently, I'm not an expert but I think its either Julia Maesa or Domna.. I'll upload a pic
