I have noticed when I search rolls of Kenedys several I'm finding have no reeded edge. Is this a magician coin or has someone ground them down? Thanks for your help in advance.

My guess, it's probably slot machine damage. Slot machines roll coins along their edge then drop them into the metal bin when they pay out. Since most people when they win half dollar slots just cash them back in at the casino's cashier cage, they usually get put right back in the slot machine. Repeated cycles of rolling and dropping tends to wear the reeds off the edge and the surface of the coin tends to have a badly beaten appearance from repeated contact marks, caused from them dropping on each other and also rubbing against each other. Slot machines are not nice to the coins they dispense.

A large portion of the circulation of half dollars, to the degree they circulate at all, seems to be in slot machines, so this is a pretty common thing to see in roll and box searching of halves. You used to see this a lot with Ike and SBA dollars, but when casinos switched to using their own $1 tokens in the slots, they were finally spared this abuse.
