I have what appears to be a very old coin or medal of some kind. On the front is Pope Gregory IX and on the back is Saint Peter. This has been in my family for quite some time. I believe my grandfather acquired it during the great depression. I would very much appreciate any info available on this including what it may be worth. Thanks, -Tom Indingaro
First, welcome to the neighborhood! It appears to be a cast copy of a medal and not a very good one at that. (No offense intended toward you or your family.) Chris
Surely it's not a coin. The only reference I've found is for a "refund medal" (it.: "medaglia di restituzione", maybe my translation is not clear, but they are like commemoratives) a posthumous medal minted to celebrate kings or popes, or other important people (in ancient Rome there were refund coins, minted by the emperors to celebrate their predecessors). It's been reported a Gregory IX refund medal with St. Peter and keys, but I have no further information, nor pictures, and I don't know if this could be, if it's original, or a copy. If I have your permission, I can show the medal in the italian forum lamoneta.it, searching for further information. petronius :smile
Here, a similar medal for Pope Innocent IV (1243-1254) that was Pope two years later than Gregory IX (1227-1241) http://numismatica-italiana.lamoneta.it/moneta/W-A181/1 petronius :smile
