I know this is a common topic but this penny above has me a little confused. It looks like the 9 loops around. Can anyone tell if it is a small date? I don't use the seven since it is still a tiny bit lower than the other letters. It looks to me like small date because the 9 is looping around and pointing to the seven.
It's easy really. The hook of the 9 points back to the 7 in the date, and the top edge of the 7 and 9 are even, it's a small date. The hook points to the S mint mark, and the top edge of the 7 in the date sets below the top edge of the 9, it's a large date. http://www.lincolncentresource.com/smalldates/1970Ssmalldate.html
On my coin though, the 9 doesn't point down to the mintmark. It curves around although it looks bent but I don't know if that is something else that is connecting the edge of the loop of the 9. If you see in the picture though, the small date is a little lower than the O and usually just use the 9.
Could have taken a hit on the loop of the 9. Sometimes a small die chip can have an effect on the appearance also. The lack of weakness in liberty and the low 7 look like a large date.
That is the very reason why the position of the 7 is used as a pick-up point (PUP) for the small date. If the 7 is lower, it's not a small date. Very simple. Good luck on getting that small date. It gets easier to recognize when you don't try to ignore the PUP.
Yes, large date. That is obviously some sort of mark across the bottom of the loop of the nine. I am surprised there was no 1970s small date in these CWR rolls. I got a call yesterday from a bank manager telling me that they had a lot of CWR. She told me she shipped out $100 worth and she was waiting for me to come in for them so I left her my number. At least I found a couple teen wheats, 1917 and 1913 along with a small pile of common wheats. I usually check for 1970s small dates but only found one roll searching. They are hard to find.
