SO I have asked about some things here, and never have pics. So, I have some pics. Last week I unexpectedly bought a largish group of LRB. Here are a few bad pics representative of the quality: The lot was 500 or so coins. The quality really is quite nice, but the photos bad. Most are Constantine and family, and Valentinian and Valens. I would grade the worst as good Fines, with most VF with some XF's in there. I would say these pics are pretty representational of the lot, especially pic 1. These are really bad pics, but you can see the level of detail present. Not the typical Ebay junk, but still quite a few more common LRB's than I really need. There is quite a bit of repetition, though, with them appearing to be made up for a dealer promotion. THe Valens and Valentinians especially are only two types each, one with an Angel and the other the Emperor dragging captive with a staff with ChiRo on it. The others are more diverse. My wife is thinking about getting into Ebay, and maybe these will go on there. What do you guys think? Good Ebay fodder? Here is something else I talked about. I bought this last year just for the coins, but now feel bad tossing the old paperwork with it: In this book is three denari, Trajan, Hadrian, and AP. I just feel bad tossing this paperwork. Should I?
If they represent the lot as you say, then they wouldn't be hard to sell on ebay IMO. Sounds like a neat lot.
Let me know when the coins go up on ebay, please. Maybe the paperwork would be useful to someone here at CT.
That first coin looks fantastic to me, much better than the $30-50 coins I'm browsing for my first purchase. Would coins like that cost way more than that?
I'm no ancients expert, but I think the OP coin is definitely a nice one also. I hope that if I buy a lot of 50-100 ancients on ebay at $1.50 - $2.00 per coin, that 5% would look the the OP coin in details.
My limited experience has been that $2 coins don't provide any percentage that look like the OP but tend to be rougher. Finders and wholesalers of coins are very good at sorting. Regarding the paperwork: I'd suggest placing low end coin(s) of the appropriate type(s) with it and giving it to the buyer for no extra over the coins except for the postage. Such paperwork would not be desired by experienced collectors but might be enjoyed by a beginner. Even if it only went with one coin, the buyer would have the incentive to add the others later.
Thanks Doug, good suggestion. I thought the paperwork was kind of cool and historical, but anyone who buys what I do cannot keep all of this kind of packaging for lack of space. Lonegun, I would agree with Doug. Most Ebay lots, (and I used to buy lots of uncleaned coins and see those lots all of the time), are basically the coins dealers and most collectors do not want. You will not find nice quality, problem free VF's in there, since those would have been picked out by dealers for resale. In a few days there may be another option for you. Chris
