Today I got (won, bought or received) four new (to me) Falling Horsemen coins of Constantius II. They were $5, $10, $16 and $132. One is an R2 rarity in RIC while the others are common (C or C2). The R2 is not the expensive one. I believe this shows just what an odd hobby this is. Only one is actually in hand: I won't say which one it is. Did anyone else have a big day?
A nice little horseman. The surfaces are reminiscent of earlier Constantinian hoards from northwestern European. I will refrain from guessing the price until I see the other three. Do you have your collection imaged and cataloged anywhere? I've also had a banner week, as seen in my other threads.
I believe this coin is what we should call British Museum Bathed. It is Bridgnorth hoard which was conserved (and picked over) by the BM before being returned to the finder. I would like to know how they mass clean a hoard of 2800 coins. I just 'finished' an extensive page on Falling Horsemen showing coins from all 15 mints that made the type but one of today's coins needs to be added to the photos so it is not online yet. My collection is not online but many of my coins do appear on my website. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/dougsmith/
No Green its a series of coins minted under the emperor Constantius around 340 AD, It depicts a Roman foot soldier slaying a Persian cavalryman, its also known as "Fel Temp Reparatio.".
Great addition Doug! I was about to ask about the page before I read on Most of the rare and scarce coins I've have (at least early on), I've gotten not knowing they were rare. I think they were passed over for the same reason by others. Once I learned what to look for, I realized with regret, all the gems I've passed over myself
