PCGS vs NGC prices for the same coin

I've seen lots of ads in Coin World for the same coin in the same grade, and 99% of the time the price is the same for NGC or PCGS. However I came across a web site that, for a $2000 coin, the PCGS price was $154 higher than the NGC price. Same coin, same grade (MS-70). All other PCGS coins were higher for the same coin/grade, just not that much of a difference.

This leads me to believe that NGC is easier on modern foreign coins, or the PCGS slab alone is worth $154 more than the NGC slab.

I know the PCGS versus NGC thing has been addressed a million times, I just thought the huge difference here was odd.

    Thoughts?

I've realized this also, my dad bought a 1904 IHC MS66RD
PCGS has it listed for $1,900
NGC has it listed for $1,270
Thats a HUGE price jump for a coin in the same grade, especially when you are buying/selling a coin...
IMO I would buy at the low price and sell at the higher price

I have seen this myself but I have also read people here stating that overall, there really isn't a price difference between a coin graded by PCGS versus NGC. I will belive that when I start seeing it for myself. All I can assume through what I have seen is that PCGS coins will sell for a higher amount over the same coins graded the same by NGC. I hope to be proven wrong someday, though.

Well this outfit thinks there is. Strange, methinks. These weren't price guide prices, these were 'for sale' prices. I prefer PCGS but there's no way I'd pay that much more.

It seems PCGS gets the highest premium, while NGC comes in with the 2nd highest premium. :smile

In general, as the grade goes higher the difference between PCGS and NGC grading becomes relatively more pronounced. This split in proprietary grading standards drives the price gap, to a degree, while marketing also contributes to the gap. Please note that I have precious little experience in modern coins, but have boatloads of it in classic issues. Most classic issues have little price difference in lower grades, but as the grade rises the difference becomes obvious. One can also look at the population reports for each company to see the raw data and where the median or mean grades are for each issue.

I don't want to start a great debate here, but I think that PCGS has a bit tighter standards overall, so I will pay a bit more for a PCGS coin over an equal NGC coin. I do have equal respect for NGC and PCGS when it comes to authentication, but when it comes to grading, PCGS is still the king. Also, CAC rules.
