Bald in old German/Gothic meant brave as in the English "bold". I guess to the English hair loss and being brave went hand in hand.

The Goths that were left after the Arab conquest of Spain became hispanized and gave many a name to the Spanish people.
Hence the Spanish names Valdez or Valadez = son of the bald (brave).

 

Here is somebody who may have been bald - or maybe not. Emperor Charles II called Charles le Chauve or Charles the Bald (note the "Baldness" paragraph in that link). http://images3.numishop.eu/images/euro/feu_259757.jpg On the coin (which I do not have) he looks pretty hairy ...
