Bald in old German/Gothic meant brave as in the English "bold". I guess to the English hair loss and being brave went hand in hand. The Goths that were left after the Arab conquest of Spain became hispanized and gave many a name to the Spanish people. Hence the Spanish names Valdez or Valadez = son of the bald (brave).
