Big marketing win for NGC. I want to see the GSA gols coins, but I doubt I'll buy one. It seems unlikely that there aren't a few government hoards still to be found. There were so many coins in so many places that there must be at least a few bags of uncirculated Morgan dollars or some other denomination stuck in the back of a vault someplace.

 

These coins.... any 1927-D or 1933 Saints? hehe

Anyone who has done a tour in the military and had access to warehoused goods can tell stories of items that have been off the books for years, but never sold. Old crates of something that had something put in front of it or on top. I live in CA and we have the remains of the Oakland Army Supply Terminal. This is where most of the supplies for WW11 and South East Asia conflicts came and shipped from. It is not like finding a box in a warehouse, but a warehouse in a multisquare mile compound.The logic of storage through the years changes with technology and items found that have use because they are new but of older versions.Many items are sold to foreign countries that wish to have a military but cannot afford to buy the latest technology. Aircraft in a crate, vehicles in a box down to those infamous 100.00 toilet seats. Gold is the currency of the world in lands that had no currecy or way to spend it. I would bet the military has a bit of that in a vault at Nuclear base way deep.It is not a seceret, but people come and go . Great amounts of most any thing you could think of is probably in a warehouse with an old cardbord wire tag that is faded and the number on the box no longer corresponds with anything. I would guess that one day a hoard of gold will turn up in a warehouse belonging to the Military but it will not be put in airtites.

You can see this even at bases where merchandise is stored for military base exchages.

 

They find some pretty cool things at them supply points.

Like .45s from the Korean war era... still sealed in bags, all greased up, ready to use, no rust, perfect condition. Too bad to actually get those at an auction, they'd have to be "de-miled"..

 

I know that some years back (80s??) the feds sold off some WWII flyers' emergency kits that contained gold coins. These were issued to pilots in case they got shot down.

 

Does anyone here happen to know which dealers possess these coins?

This has been discussed on several other forums and mailing lists and searched for by several people. No one has been able to turn up any confirmation of any GSA gold coin sales. The dealership that is selling these GSA gold coins that the author can refer you to, just happens to be a dealer that he works for.

I suspect the dealer has purchased a group of gold coins seized by the authorities from drug dealers who were using them for money laundering and they have convinced NGC to slab them as "GSA Gold" (The same way the TV people get special labels on some of the things they sell. Offer enough money and "Sure we'll do it".) because the GSA usually handles selling off government property like that. It is probably NOT anything like the GSA dollar sales were.

Initial response back from Coin World posted on the WINS-Talk mail list (GDJMSP, are you Doug P on WINS? If so I'm sorry if I'm stealing your thunder.) Coin World knows nothing of any GSA gold coin hoard sale. They say they will continue looking into the matter.

Sounding even more like a marketing scam to me. If Coin World didn't know about it, it probably didn't happen.
