I've been picking up quite a few coins lately... So I figured I'd post what I'm picking up and seeing what you guys think the coins would grade at and of its worth getting them slabbed? So here's coin #1: 1875 seated liberty half dollar with a nice purple toning!! For is it worth it purposes I paid $125 for it in a silent auction Here's the pics:
Because the absence of any luster in the protected areas and the hairlines in the fields that I suspect it was on the receiving end of a harsh cleaning. But then again it might look different in hand.
Can't tell from the poor quality of the photographs, but I agree that the coin looks harshly cleaned, and is re-toning. It would not be slabbed in anything but a "details" slab.
After a second look I do agree it has been cleaned at least on the obverse, the reverse doesn't look cleaned. I'll see if I can post better pics tomorrow. This is why I love this site! Very knowledgeable members!
That's why we're here. A little piece of advice, don't let the level of detail obscure your view of the overall coin's true appearance. I use to buy coins like this that has the level of detail that is appropriate for XF-MS grades. Only to find out the hard way that some of them were cleaned. It's a good lesson in the end.
