So every few weeks I go to some local dealers and pick up either a half canvas bag (2500) or a full bag of Wheats (5000). I usually find the known key dates if they haven't been pick out yet. But my second favorite passion is to cherry pick varieties and small errors. I usually find a dozen or so RPM's per search, but here is my first doubled die find, and it's a goody!

Close up of the date, shows all the appropriate diagnostics and clear separation.

During 1935, the hubbing exhibited a "peg-legged" letter R in Liberty that carried over to the 1936 dies (DDO only). It was soon corrected.

After some 125k wheat cents searched through, it just goes to show you that persistence does pay off. Whew!

Super cool! I have found some minor varieties as I am going through my first bag or two.

Same here, I find a nice healthy mix of RPM's much like the 57-D you just posted. But this is one of my more significant "wheat" finds. I'm aiming for a 44 D/S next and a 1955 Type 2 DDO.

Sweet! My first find was the 1956D (a few of them in the same bag) with really clear separation, and they were in great condition to boot!

It gets addicting, trust me. And it's a good way to fund your hobby and get yourself some real nice pieces. I have you dialed in on your find on your other thread (1957-D RPM), I think it will surprise you.

It is very addicting. Some on the forum do not understand, but I go back and forth between CT and cent searching most evenings.

That's me too, I don't have a whole lot of other things happening later in the evenings when the kids head to bed. In my estimation, the 1936 DDO is a very obtainable variety key along with the 1917, 1941, and 1947 because of the subtle nature of the doubling. You would still need a decent glass to see the doubling, it's not in your face like the 1955.

Thanks Jim. What happened to your other avatar photo, we were getting used to the man behind the scenes!

I will look again at some of those date. However, I have been looking carefully for the 1941 to no avail. Fingers crossed.

Don't forget the 1963D DDO. They are common, inexpensive, and easily seen.

    Is that a nine?

Took me a little to figure out the "9" question. I think you mean under the "3". No , it is another "3". This is a Class 7 DD, meaning that one pressing of the working die used one hub, and another pressing of the same working die, used another hub which had a modification done to part of it, in this case the position of the 3.
