Bought this on the evil ebay last night (I have used this dealer before as well)
picture was strangly blurry but on close examination I decided to gamble and bought this (cheap because of blurry pic)
What do You think? here are the sellers pics(will post good pics in a few days when it arrives)

Depends what you paid...The pics are crummy and as such, it looks to be a cleaned or polished coin to me. The 1885P is one of the 10 or so most common Morgand with a mintage over 17 million. So unless it is a very high-grade coin there really is no premium over silver melt value. Again, it could be the pictures, but it appears to be a worn coin that was polished.

I think you're a true gambler, lol. Hope you didn't pay too much over melt, and I hope the coin is genuine.

You can't ask us if it was a good gamble without disclosing vital info like how much you paid for it.

ok the gamble was a whopping 35 and as i said i have dealt with this dealer previously so not worried about fake or cleaned as is returnable :D And yes it is a common date but i need one for my morgan yearbook and I have a feeling that this will turn out a very nice coin. What "I" see in these slightly blurry pics is a highly reflective morgan with great details AU if not better. As for paying almost a $10 premium over melt, It would cost me about twice that in gas on a round trip to the nearest coin shop i could buy a morgan at so i'll deal with it. I may be all wet about the quality of the coin and the blurring might hide a well circulated morgan but I prefer optimism and dreams of DMPLs lol

For reasons stated, I think the gamble was good. I have made worse (and I know that without ever seeing the coin you are getting).

Also, I agree with optimism and dreams.

DMPL? Not likely. There are no breast feathers visible at all on the reverse (wear), and look at the lettering...you can easily see dark areas in the middle of the P's and B's etc, as well as around other devices (cleaned). The luster looks completely flat (polished). I hope it turns out to be a pleasant surprise for you but the seller needs to put better pics up.

If I had to guess, it would be a cleaned AU.

Turn out to be pretty nice though a few marks, But since it is also a VAM-2 I can't complain :D

Much better.....but I fear the coin's been scrubbed a bit. Still, you didn't overpay by much on this darling.

No not too bad and I think it being a "scarce" (r3) VAM-2 puts me slightly ahead :D

if you are happy with it thats all that matter. When silver shoots sky high then your gamble will be covered.

Is this a really valuable VAM?

Umm. Are you sure it's a VAM-2? It looks like a VAM-9 (eye scratches) to me. Then again, it could be a part of the "cleaning" that someone did at some point.

In either case, both are "minor varieties" that are acknowledged by PCGS. I can't see it carrying much of a premium.

BTW, PCGS coinfacts is semi-useless. Most of the coins I want to see are "Photo Not Available" types. :p

Yes Im sure of the VAM-2 (though more sure of it not being a 9 as it carries no visible die cracks and the doubling on the 5 is different.
As for coinfacts I don't use them much i use VAMworld as they have good examples of most vams with full and close up photos. Including most of the vams not found on the hot, hit and top vam lists. It is a great site for VAM information (and I again thank the CT members that pointed me there in the 1st place)
