I'm having a bit of trouble pinning down this particular coin.It is obviously Austro-Hungarian and is dated 1666 with the name Carolus (Charles) but I can't find a Charles who was king or emperor for this date. The original 2x2 flip I bought it was in said "Bishop Charles Joseph of Olmutz" and I did find such a character but he was appointed bishop by special dispensation from the Pope because he was only 14.This was in 1663 and he died the following year. Also,I've never seen the D.G.R. used for anything other than a monarch and the man on the portrait is obviously not 14. Can anyone help me out? Also, what is the denomination? Inscriptions:Obv:OLOMVCENSIS CAROLVS DG EPVS REVRINCEPS REG CABACOM 1666 Thanks!!
Mike, It looks a little like one of my 3 Kreuzers??? I don't have my collection with me now though. Still in Minneapolis. Ben
I'm thinking 3 Kreuzers too,the hole it's sitting in in my photos is for a US quarter so you can judge the size. Hopefully someone will recognize it??
In 1666 Leopold the Hogmouth was on the throne of Austria, None of the Austrian States are listed in my 1999 2d Ed. 16th Century Krause with a ruler named Charles, but in 1666 Karl II von Liechtenstein-Castelcom (also listed as Carl II Graf von Liechtenstein) ruled the Archbishopric of Olmutz, in Moravia. The legends are unreadable on the Krause photos, but your coin has a very distinct resemblance to KM#65.2, a silver 3 Kreuzer, specifically including the large bust which breaks the inner circle. It is listed at $3 VG to $$25 XF. I may have missed it, but I didn't find any other Austrian State ruler in 1666 whose name began with a hard "C" or a "K".
Thanks Roy! From your info,I did a bit of Googling and found a bit of stuff on this guy on this site which is about his Castle in modern day Czech Republic. http://www.worldheritagesite.org/sites/kromeriz.html As you said,he was Archbishop of Olomouc Karl II von Liechtenstein-Kastelcorn which would explain the OLOMVCENSIS in the legend and the "bishop" on the original flip. I still haven't managed to find a photo of this coin and I don't have the 17th century Krause so I'll go ahead and label it as Austrian States KM65.2.
