Out of some $10 in pennies I found several where the top lettering on the back had recessed grooves, most were only doubling of the tops of the letters but some had that plus inner detail grooves cuts. Some of them are pre-1985 and other are after. Magnification was an issue so i hope the pic illuminates what I speak of. Btw these grooves arent shallow they are deep. Also this sort of issue also appears on other pennies in different ways, Ill link to these coins on my photobucket. Beside these examples, i also have around 5 that have a similar groove around part of the mint mark and one where the mint mark is nothing but a hole, ill try uploading it in a reply along with the other. What causes this, they are obviously a doubling of some form and beside this, the pennies are pretty decent
you will notice that all of these are 1982 and newer. that is because they started using copper plated zinc planchets in 1982 and this is the result of the copper plating splitting near the letters. the zinc will eventually start rotting and then you start seeing things disapear, like the mintmark.
that makes sense, are they of any collectable value/merit of just trash and put them back into circulation?
