The way it's going in size, I'd have to wait years and eventualy get a set on the aftermarket. I mean, they put a price tag on 2 ASEs at 150(granted, one was a reverse proof). Now, a question. Would it be good to have them availible in proof and buisness strike? And, where would you put the line between classic and modern? 1930, 1900?
I would love to see a type set of each denomination but fear the cost would be too great for the mint. Congress would probably listen to them. All the changes in relief would be tough to keep right and do justice to the original design. Die life would be a problem and drive the price past what many collectors would be willing to pay for yet one more mint product. As cool as it sounds, I can't see Congress passing such a program.
Since when does Congress worry about the cost of anything? Since the cost would passed on to collectors, why would they worry about it anyway. If the mint said that they were limiting production to say 200,000 pieces for silver and maybe 50,000 pieces for gold, no way they wouldn't sell out.
You know what I'd really like to see? New and original designs, emblematic of Liberty and freedom, not politicians, not rehashed designs from 100 years ago - but new classics that give the old ones a compliment but not a copy. I won't place my paw on me bum though, might grow to there in the whiles waiting.
Can't argue with that. I agree. At the same time I feel the mint would be looking at the size of the program and asking Congress to wait on such a challenge. This makes me wonder just how much Congress cares what the mint has to say.
It may be a nice program to start after the Presidential dollars/spouse coins and metals and the national parks quarters and silver pucks are finished. I agree that it would be a bit much for the mint to handle such a program and maintain the high quality that collectors would expect. As far as being worried about these coins being passed off as originals, all they would have to do is add a mintmark.
I have to agree reviving the old coins at proof sets would be fantastic. Of course we already see the problem here everyone want's a different coin set. Mine would be Cent- Flying Eagle Nickel- Shield Nickel or "V" nickel Dime- Mercury Quarter- Standing Liberty Half Dollar- Morgan Dollar- morgan or peace (tough call) Or better yet leave presidents on the paper money, but get get em the **** off my coins
Introducing the RETRO SET. That's right we're rereleasing the coins everybody has with the new date, even though the originals are half as much! You get the Indian Head cent, Liberty nickel, Mercury dime, Standing Liberty quarter, Walking Liberty half-dollar, and Morgan Dollar, all for the flat low price of 10x melt! To order your RETRO SET call the US mint at 1-800-USA-MINT or the Franklin mint at 1-800-OUR-PRODUCTS-CARRY-NO-PREMIUM. Wow, this joke was not funny...

Kirk, we'd like to see the program somewhat before the end of our great grandchildren's lifetime........
Great idea Detecto, I knew you were good for something. j/k It may work and I will certainly sign a petition, I'd love to see the Mint bring back some old designs!! :thumb::thumb: You even brought out Muttley with that idea!
I always had a similar idea, but not the same. I always thought they should simply do collector sets of current coins, but in off metal and other novelty ways. Just take the cent. I think a presentation box with aluminum, bronze, brass, nickel cents, and maybe a large piece of bronze in the center about the size of a credit card with 4 die impressions of the cent into it, (something like swedish plate money), would be a fantastic centerpiece to a collection. Since they are just cents and cheap metals, the cost to the mint would be around $1 plus packaging, and if they sold it for $50 I would about guarantee a sellout of 100,000 units. I guess what I am saying is while the OP's idea is good, (although personally I DETEST the mint using old designs, they should be held accountable and be forced to create new designs worthy of our country's heritage), I think there may be more resistance to digging up old designs. I think that if they simply did a lot more, (like trial strikes I describe, pieforts, etc), with current designs they could create the same buzz even with our current ugly designs.
My revival set would be with edge lettering for the true date for obvious reasons, proof or uncirculated would be the choice of the customer for each individual coin (maybe make the coins .999 fine silver so the weights would be different than the originals, i don't know if it'd make that big of a difference tho) cent-1909-s vdb wheat nickel-1913 liberty dime-1894-s barber quarter- 1916 standing liberty half-1921-s walking liberty dollar-1893-s morgan
