I would love to be buying at those prices but hate to think about the value of my current stack. The lost value per oz would be very depressing.
I stopped buying silver when it hit the ridiculous price of $6.50 an ounce. Canna say I have any problem with where it has been ever since.
I sometimes find myself looking wistfully at the prices from 1960's and 1970's price guides. But then I think about my income (allowance) then, compared to my income today, and I brighten considerably.
I wish I still had all my SILVER SURFER comics #1 - #20. I wish I still had my first edition Stephen King "THE STAND". I wish I bought gold at $40 oz. I wish I still had my Beatles Lunchbox. I wish I had bought that 40 acres of riverside property that my friend bought instead. He paid $7,000 and sub-divided it five years later into 10 lots and sold off each lot for $15,000 when a main road was put through. And so on and so on.....
Yeah, but its also a dangerous daydream. If you just daydream about the past you will not act in the present. I could daydream all day long about hoards hitting the market 40 years ago and how I would like to own one of those coins today. Instead, I buy hoards that come to the market today, knowing if I don't I will regret it in 20 years. Do what you can, when you can, and don't torture yourself about "what could have been".
I wish I had said "yes" to the hottie that asked me out in my senior year of high school... what was I thinking? The point is, ya canna change the past, ya can only change the today and the tomorrows.
And this is why I have sold pretty much all my junk silver. I wanted to extract the current value now while the price is historically high, and reinvest into my collection for nicer pieces. I'm glad I completed sets of Franklins, Roosevelts and Washingtons as a teenager in the 1990s.
Silver is almost 40% below its all time high at current price ($50 or so). If you go inflation adjusted high you are looking at at least $125+ an oz. and its only about 1/4 that price. Not to mention with the continual debasement of the U.S. currency you could make a case for a much higher price then $125+ an oz..... My 2 copper cents...
Honestly when I was a teenager I remember all the other members of the coin club saying stuff that made me jealous. You'll get your chance just like I did.
No exactly sure what you're getting at with this, but I felt it was time to finally cash out (I also cashed out some at last year's highs) to extract my massive returns. I still have a couple ASEs and dollars that I could sell again if prices go $50+ again. I also buy some junk halves here and there too to rebuild the stash for future rises.
Exactly. Not that many people know what this coin is, but right now you can buy very pretty Hormizd II coins for $100. This is an early Sassanian coin, high artistic style, of a ruler who ruled only 6 years. It used to be one of the rarest Sasanian coins, but evidently they found a large horde of high quality coins and the price has dropped like a rock. I guarantee in 20 years this coin will be scarce again, and those of us who bought today will be envied by anyone wishing to start collecting Sasanian coins. You do what you can do, buy what you can today, because if I have learned anything in 35 years of collecting it is good coins continue to become scarcer and harder to buy. Take advantage and buy good coins when you have the chance, odds are you will not have the same opportunity in the future.
I paid $200 for a coin when I was a snotty nerdy teeniebopper that has appreciated exponentially - turns out it is a very rare coin that is one of only three known examples. It was a bit of knowledge and a lot of luck to be at the right place at the right time at an ancient and Medieval coin show. $200 was a lot of dosh then, but the coin is easily well into a four figure + category now. Knowledge combined with luck can be a real bonus.
Indeed...I recently got an AG/G 1913-D Type 2 Buffalo nickel for $7 at a local antique store. And this was from an otherwise knowledgable coin sellers booth...their mistake, my gain.
Similarly I have picked up slick SL quarters at the Antique Mall for $1 from a dealer that should have known better. Not worth as much as a nicer Washer silver wise, but still worth more than a buck me thinks.
