Dimes aren't really my thing, but this one has been in my collection for years, just never paid any attention to it. How do I determine the date, since it's clipped off? It's got an "S" mint mark on the back. Are there any design features that might give me a clue? And, are these types of errors worth anything, or just a novelty? Thanks. Again.
You can narrow down the date to a range of years based on the metal content. If it's a 90% silver Roosevelt, then it would have to date between 1946-1964. It appears to be a circulation strike, if there is a s mintmark and it's silver then it would be dated from 46-55. 1955 was the last year San Francisco Mint minted dimes for circulation. As far as the value, it would have to be at least as much of the bullion value of the coin. I hope this helps.
Well, if it has an S mint mark on the back, it's probably made entirely of silver- Does it have a copper core? If it's silver, its made before 1965, so it's 1964 mint or older! They are collectable, and valuable! Especially in Silver!
Thanks for the inputs. It looks to be completely silver, or at least, the interior of the cut is the same color as the rest of the coin. And it definitely is "S" mint mark. I'll bet there is some "tell" somewhere on the coin, maybe some slight difference that will further narrow it down. I'm just not very familiar with dimes.
I believe it's as narrowed down as much as possible to ~1946-1955. There aren't any documented tells which would pinpoint the exact date.
