I first saw one of these when someone posted one on here (it may have been JBlonde). I really wanted one, and today I found this in the coin shop and got it for the silver value. I really like it. Italian 1966 500 Lire.
A good deal :thumb: I think that 500 Lire Caravelle is the best coin of the Italian Republic (since 1946). The Lady on reverse is Letizia Giampaoli, wife of the engraver Pietro Giampaoli...as Teresa de Francisci on Peace Dollar petronius :smile
Thanks for the info. Italy really does have some pretty coins. I haven't really seen one I didn't like.
Nice, thanks for sharing. I have been looking at coins from Italy lately but not picked anything up. Still educating myself. This one will be on the list when I do start collecting Italian coinage. I was stationed in Italy for eight years but did not collect at that time. Kick myself now. MikeP
Congratulations on your NEWP. It looks like a nice one. :hail: I share your appreciation of this beautiful design. The young girl in medieval dress is one of my personal favorites. I think I still need coins dated 1961, 1962, and 1963 to complete my set. My set started with a single $7 purchase not unlike yours. Here are two previous CT threads where the 500 Lire coin is depicted & discussed. http://www.cointalk.com/t69049/ http://www.cointalk.com/t207551/ Here is a 500 Lire from 1961. It was a one year commemorative issue (obviously not the pretty girl in midieval dress with the three ships reverse).
The ships are nice, but I am a sucker for beautiful women on coins. Nice one, I am going to start looking for one too.
