I don't know the answer to this, but it would be interesting to know. Presumably with the price of gold down and the price of the commemoratives steady, sales will not be good. Gold commemoratives seem to have a very small following compared to the silver commemoratives anyway.
Yes, and have you seen some of the premiums these things carry?! See here for an example. I have not bought any of the San Francisco Commems yet, but I'm thinking that if not too many people are interested now, the mintage will be fairly low and they'll be hotter commodities in the future. Of course, that's just speculation (something of which I'm not very comfortable with). Oh, and I don't think enough people will read this post to mess that up. Of course, I wouldn't buy one if I didn't like it. I like the view of the SF Mint on the Obverse, but I just can't decide if I like the Reverse. Don't get me wrong, I like the Reverse design, but I'm just kind of against the mint reusing all of these old designs... just personal preference I guess.
I like it too, but I don't know if it will turn out to be a profitable item. Some of the gold commems sell for fairly large premiums over the melt value and have low mintages, but if you go to sell one, it seems that dealers and others discount the price by much more than, say, a regular $5 gold liberty coin. This probably reflects the difficulty that they will have reselling it. Maybe it could eventually be sold on Ebay for more, but that's unpredicatble. So make sure you want to keep it before you buy it.
Maybe I should have asked you to break that down for total mintages for proof and uncirculated. Just wondering where you are getting that info. TIA CLAW
I got the information from US Mint, Public Relations at (202)354-7222. They would not give me the breakdown between Proofs and Uncirculated, just the total sold so far and the total mintage allowed.
