Okay so I want to get a crapload of rolls to search through this weekend. I want to get like 2k coins at the least.

I'm just wondering what should I get? I know I have asked this before but that was also before I started roll-searching. By now I have searched through hundreds of rolls.

Really I guess it boils down to what you like. If you're a nickels person, then get a ton of nickel rolls for example. But I personally kind of like all coins. I like quarters, halves, nickels, pennies.

I haven't had much luck with dimes. I got $10 worth of dimes last time and I found nothing earlier than 1966, kind of a waste of searching time.

Quarters I haven't had much luck with either, I've gotten a few rolls of them before but haven't really found anything good (found late 60's stuff and a bicentennial - not really anything unusual or worth much at all.)

Nickels - I've got pre-65's and some silver war ones, I've also found 1940's and 50's in rolls before. So I've had semi-good luck with those.

As for pennies, I've found probably 30 wheats in 60 rolls I've searched through. Lots of searching but it's fun. Pennies I have had the most luck with no doubt.

Normally when I go to the bank I get about $20 in pennies, $10 in dimes, $10 in quarters, and $10 in nickels. When I go Friday though I would like to get as many rolls of one type of particular coin as I can get for under $100 face value. I like all coins, this thread/question is more just for fun I guess I want someone else to choose for me since I can't make up my own mind.

I just want your advice, recommendations, suggestions on what type of particular coin rolls I should get. Pennies? Nickels? Quarters? Dimes?
(Don't even ask about halves - every bank in town doesn't have them and there's like 8 or 9 banks :'( )

    Thank you!

Instead of looking for only early years, why dont you also look for errors! It can be very fun and give you a perminate pain in your neck! LOL.

Oh yeah, I've been doing that too! I always have my Red Book with me when I'm going through a big ol' jar of 1k+ coins. I always keep a sharp eye out for 'S' mints, low mintage, and coins with errors. Although I do have a hard time telling the difference between wide and normal AM on the pennies (examples I have looked up look the same as the normal ones to me.)

Early dates is fun too though, especially for a history buff like me (I love history!) Early dates is what I keep my eye out for, I pretty much keep anything that is 1969 or before (even if it's not special, like a 1967 D quarter or something.) But yeah, I keep my eye out for errors - at least the kind listed in the Red Book.

Why not halfs, really you can still find some silver-clad around, also you will find they will be less of a pain in the neck. Good luck

I would LOVE to go through rolls of halves, but read the very last line (smaller font) of my post. :p

Tough luck for me I guess. :(

If you're looking for the oldest coins then you have little choice but to stick with cents and nickels.

My bank doesn't stock halves either, but since I have an account, they will order them in $500 box increments. I go through a box in one night and redeposit the unused coins the next day, that way I'm not out the money for too long (...collecting on a budget). I order from a few different banks so I don't get the same box again.

Nickels are fun. I've been putting together sets for a while, just for fun. No luck with dimes. Cents are fun. Definitely get a varieties book. This kind of roll search will keep you going for a long time.

Although it doesn't strictly fit your requirements, I'd go for one box of pennies and one of nickels. Nickels are pretty fun imo as are pennies. Not to mention, you get plenty to search with each box. Of course it'll be slightly over your $100 budget.

Not sure where you live but around me halves are really easy to acquire and I love getting about 10 rolls every few weeks. I have never found anything of value in them but it sure is fun spending them. It's amazing how many people have never seen one. In stores they can't find a place in the cash register to put them. I've had people approach me and say wow where did you ever get coins like that. Same with $2 bills. I've actually had people refuse the halves saying they don't take foriegn money. As to buying rolls for collection purposes, you can't beat Nickels. You could just about fill a Whitman Album from one bag of nickels. Don't know why but sure is a lot of old Nickels still in circulation.

Well, I finally decided on two figures and got them!

    What I got was:
    - $25 worth of pennies (2,500 pennies total.)
    - $26 worth of nickels (520 nickels total.)

I will post the results as soon as I am finished searching through them (oh boy, this is going to take a while.) I hope I have some nice run-ins and fun. Wish me luck!

Here's a picture of all 63 penny and nickel rolls:

    Good luck.

I'll predict your oldest nickel is 1941 and the oldest cent is 1919.

That's what my bank said about halves, too! :(

So I was forced to buy $40 worth of quarters.... ;)

Ive been looking around for pennies. I was surprised when it was easier to find them than I thought it would be. I just asked a few different elderly people if they had penneis or even nickles that I could buy off them. Told them that I wanted to look for older coins for my collection, and that I would cash them in for them. I started with my grandmother and bought a 5 gallon bucket off her. Got it figured out that on average, 35 lbs of pennies is $50 and a 5 gallon bucket is a whole lot more than you would ever think it would be. Anyhow, I have so far searched through about $800 worth of pennies, and paid well face value. I started off looking for wheaties but found alot of errors too. I also saved all the ones that were close to uncirculated and now have started on 10 different roll sets. I find the roll sets are fun to work on collecting. They arent worth much now, but when I have 500 complete collections of memorials, that will be something. Im also working on roll sets of Dimes and nickles. Ive found that 1982 is a really tough year to find in dimes and nickles, and you might want to hang onto those, but if you dont care to, save them for me, I need them really bad to finish my roll sets, and would buy them off of you.

Thank you guys for you replies!

I finally got through all 3,020 coins (took about 5 hours) then it took another few hours to post them online. Here are the results of the big search.
