Hello Everybody, I have a question concerning my Morgan collection. I have been working on this set for a number of years, I am trying to finish a complete set of Morgans. MY question is, I have this collection in Dansco Albums. What I have noticed is that it seems almost everyone of the coins are starting to tone on the edges. Some alittle more than others. And the toning is a dark color on the edges. I guesss I am worried that the coins will all turn a dark brown color instead of the nice different colors that you see on certain Morgans. I have both albums in a zip lock plastic bag, and I also have put several bags of dessicant to absorb any mostiure. As you all know it doesn't take long to have a sizable investment in any coin collecrtion. So is this toning natural, will this affect the value, good or bad. And any advice I can get will certainly be appreciated. Thanks..Ray
Is it natural ? I'd say so based on your description. But that brown toning you mention is what happens far, far more often than attractive colorful toning. And if that is what is going on, and you don't like it, then you have little choice but to change how you are storing the coins. That means getting them out of the album, putting them in good quality coin holders (hard plastic holders in other words), and then following the rest of the proper storage methods.
From what I have read and seen recently toned coins are presently selling with higher values and it is not uncommon for them to tone in dansco albums. I will add that I have my morgans in a dansco album as it seems one of the most highly recommended albums i have come across. Hopefully one of the more knowledgable members will speak up.
GDJMSP, what you have said is a main concern of mine. The toning being the dark color and this have an effect to the value of this collection. I would hate to have collected all these years and end up with coins that might be hard to sell, or worse the coins loose value. Thanks Ray
Ray, your concern is valid. To expand on what GDJMSP mentioned, toning that will negatively affect the value would generally be very dark toning, or unattractive patterns. Without seeing an example of your Morgan's, it's hard to say how the toning will impact the value. It's all about eye appeal to a toner collector. Also, when toning runs it;s course and starts getting real dark or black, it has actually caused damage to the coin. Share an image if you would like a better opinion in this case.
Agree strongly with what the other dudes say. As a longtime Morgan collector (40 years, and 5 separate collections), I have gravitated towards collecting toned Morgans. Rainbow, neon, pastel, golden, and attractive rim toning will bring incredible premiums. The ugly, blackish battleship toning will, indeed make the coins worth less. Dansco albums can cause that type of toning on Morgans, so do be prudent as to storage.
I am sorry but I don't have a way to post pics right now. The coins I have in my Daansco albums still look very good. But there are a few that you can see that the rim on them is changing color. So far the color on the edge is dark with a little bit of an orange look. Alot of the Morgans that I have bought over the years, when I bought them they came in the plastic cases with the black spunge ring that circles the coin keeping it from moving in the plastic. I am thinking if I don't need to put all of them back in these capsules? Over the years I have collected many Morgans, and the ones that are not in the albums are still in their plastic capsules and look just like they did when I bought them. As of right now, there are 7 Morgans that I need to complete my set. I am not counting the 1895 Proof, unless I win the lottery, I probably want get that one! But again, Thank You to all that have helped me..Ray
Danscos are known to give coins toning, some attractive and some...not so much. You could get a slipcover to see if that helps.
Again, I want to thank everyone who has given me such good advice. It has been a couple of weeks since I realy took the Morgans down and gave them a good look over. This is when I saw how much some have toned. So a little while ago I started looking for every air tight that I have. I took all the Morgans out of the first book and now they are back in air tights. I am about 6 or 8 air tights short to finish the last book. I will pick these up this weekend and take care of the rest of them. I am just happy that I caught them now than alot later. And the good thing is there were only 8 or 10 that had the dark tone on the rims, so I am thankful for that. My Peace dollar set have always been in air tights so know worry there. Also my old comemoratives are in the air tights, and the modern comems are in there original boxes. Over the years I have collected some of alot of the different coins, it's just the Morgans have always been my favorites. Cowboy Money! Again Thanks Everyone..Ray
This is a concern as well. What would best would be to remove the coins from the original boxes, leaving them in their original hard plastic holders, and store the coins separate from the boxes. By all means take care to store & protect the boxes and all of the original packaging. Just don't keep them in the same container with the coins, keep them separate. The reason for doing this is because the original packaging (boxes etc) can, over time, put off gasses that will cause the coins to tone, perhaps unattractively so.
Sometimes the kind of album/crescent toning you describe can positively effect the value of a Morgan. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Oh definitely--forgot to mention crescent toning. Some of those are the most expensive, and beautiful Morgans. As regards the Dansco and toning, it is a mixed bag--some Morgans can tone attractively in a Dansco, but for the most part--they don't. They get the dark brown/battleship gray and blackish tone from the Dansco, barring some exceptions. If one is worried about ugly toning, I'd avoid keeping them in a Dansco--since they are large coins, if they tone, it will be quite noticeable. When I was a kid, my first collection of Morgans was raw, in a Dansco, with mixed results--mostly ugly.
The Picture that RaceBannon posted, this Morgan looks like the ones I took out of the Dansco album last nigh. None were any more toned than this, but I wasn't sure about this, so I asked for everybodies help. Thanks for posting the pic. GDJMSP, thanks for the tip about tne comem's.
