    Hi,
I ran across this coin the other day and forgot I had it. I have tried to find out what it is and where it came from, but had no success. So I decided to come to the experts. Does anybody here recognize this coin?
It weighs about 12 grams (on a digital postal scale) and is 30 mm in dia. It looks to be gold or gold plated. I tried to belive it was polished brass or some other metal but it just has that look of gold to it. There is no denomination marking so I'm guessing it's a token. The engraving is crafted well which leads me to believe it isn't a common souvenir type piece.

Any help would be gratly appreciated,

Thanks for your time and trouble,

Could be just about anything. A bicentennial piece comes to mind. George W on one side and a tree on the other 1776-1976. Can you post a pic or find a link to something like it?

    Take Care

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too light to be gold. The 28mm 1871 Japanese ¥10, which is the closest diameter I could find quickly, weighs in at 16-2/3g of .900 gold!. ;)

    Hi Roy,
How thick is your Japanese ¥10?

    Don't I wish I had one! [IMG]

I'd estimate them to be about the tickness of a US cent.

1.05mm thick is a Chinese Gold 10 Yuan coin.

Looks like a privately minted commemorative of the Sitiawan Chapel, which would make it Malaysian..just a guess.

    Roy,
My coin is about the same thickness. The color of the metal looks too much like gold not to be though, so I'm thinking it's plated. No where on the coin does it say anything about gold though.

The writing on the coin says "The creation of Adam" on the left side and "The Sixtinian Chapel" on the right. Since Michelangelo painted the fresco of The Creation of Adam" on the Sistine Chapel I'm thinking that Sixtinian is an alternative spelling of Sistine.

Gold plate is not uncommon on private mint issues. The amount it takes to plate a coin that size, at today's gold prices, might be as much as 1-2¢ worth.

I'm probably in the wrong section of the forum. I'm more interested in what is, than what it's worth. As I browsed the forums though I couldn't find a section that looked applicable. I noticed that several others were asking the "What is this" question so I entered this one. Where should I have directed my query?

Since it has every indication of being non-US in origin, I would have gone to World & Ancient myself, but Coin Chat would also be appropriate since it's for "topics that don't fit anywhere else". :)

It is, I've no idea why you are thinking this item is gold - it appears to be silver to me. It is a privately minted silver round with the design of Michelangelo's Creation of Adam on the reverse.

You dismissed it early on...but could easily be brass.

that would sound more likely to me for a privately minted token like this...but its hard to tell from a photo.

I'm basically trying to find some info on the token itself and where it came from.
I don't know why everyone is so afraid to let it be gold plated (as it looks) It doesn't cost much, it doesn't make the coin valuable, why can't it be gold plated?

I am the last person who will bother with a coins worth. If I like the coin I get it, I dislike the 'how much can I get for it' mentality...to me its a passion for nummus not an investment and my hundreds of AE coins will attest to that.

It could very well be gold plated, its just that in my experience these type of tokens are FAR more often brass with no gold....

For me the value of any coin is in the history it represents and aesthetics...They are not investments to me but just a passion to collect and catalog all coins. Some being gold and the investment type collectors and the way Gold is so over valued (IMO) and the emphasis people put on market value and base metal worth is just nuisance to me and simply makes it harder for me to get the nice gold coins I want for my collection at a reasonable price because people artificially hike the value of the base metal while I am far more concerned with the subject of the minting.

If there were more information on the coin then that would answer the question. One could easily wonder why it MUST be gold plated...if you are sure it is gold plated...go with it...is important that it have gold in it?
