hello, i know nothing about coins but a long, long time ago my friend and his cousins found a coin at a park and he gave it to me. i have currently misplaced the coin but seem to have some vague recollections about it and am dying to know what it is. any help would be greatly appreciated. the coin is made of silver and was rather big, likely a silver dollar. on the front was a lady (i'm assuming lady liberty) that looked an awful lot like the statue of liberty. in the background there are rays of some sort. on the other side of the coin (this is fuzzy memory now) there is something that looks like a flag pole with MAYBE an eagle on top of the flagpole. but if there is the flag pole looking thing, or maybe it is a pillar or column, takes up most of the space. again, i haven't seen this coin in roughly 3 years so it's hard to remember. i am sure it is silver because my friends and i used to blow on the side and listen for the ring. another hint is that i remember the date wasn't a specific date, like 1996 or something. rather it was something like "1800-1900" actually printed on the coin. i would like to say that 1900 was actually one of the dates but i am not sure at all. i'm hoping that people can shoot out ideas so that i can google search them and hopefully find a match! again any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks.
I'm guessing that it is either or peacce dollar or an american silver eagle. If you do a google image search you can see both.
I don't believe you will find any US coin that meets all of the criteria that was spelled out, but as I read it, and thinking of the circumstances, I see a Walking Liberty half that is partially confused with another coin.
The only US coin that looks like that would be the 1989 Bicentennial of Congress dollar. The coin shows a full length Goddess of Freedom against clouds and sunburst (rays). the dates of 1789 - 1989. On the revers it has a mace (pillar) with the eagle atop. Lou
Most likely it isn't a coin at all but a commemorative medal or token. In which case it could be anything, but most likely is only worth whatever the melt value of the metal it is made of.
well, it is actually this coin: http://www.usmint.gov/images/pressroom/NEW_1989CongressBicentennialDol.jpg does any one have an idea on where i can buy it and how much it'll set me back? i want to give it to the guy who gave it to me for his birthday as a sentimental gift. thanks.
Looks like there are some on eBay. Not necessarily the best judge of price since I only see one there now: http://cgi.ebay.com/ENCAPSULATED-PR...goryZ529QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I came up with a few hits just googling: 1989 Bicentennial Congress dollar.
Good Job David. This thread helps illustrate a pet peeve of mine.90% of the "answers" that I give to people on this forum..(ancients excepted)..I get by simply Googling some of the words in the poster's question. It's amazingly easy and it makes me wonder why more people don't use this wonderful tool? OK..I feel better now.LOL
