So, I was looking at a lot on Triton. I really was torn. Given where it was at, it would have cost me about $10k overall. Not a lot to some, not necessarily a lot to me if I entertained the idea of using quite a bit of savings to buy it, but still a sizable sum for this time of the year, (I get creamed by many deductions/taxes kicking in Jan that I max out later in the year). I really was torn, but at the last minute decided to ignore the lot and not bid. I just looked it up and it went for about $17k after fees. I am so, so happy that I would not have won it anyway. The lot was simply at my "I really want it, and that price is a really good price, and not sure if I will ever get a chance again" level. Anyone else ever breathe a huge sigh of relief when you got crushed?
Oh yes, I have done that several times. Of course, it's been on ebay. I don't know about you, but I get more satisfaction when I have bid on something, going cheap, and there is only 1 bid and I throw my max bid, of course, hoping I win, but the previous bid ends up going past my max, and I don't bother bidding again. So basically I cause the one buyer to pay more then getting opening bid, if I didn't come in to play. And yes, it's happened to me too, that isn't funny though.
Yeah, I am sure I cause consternation as the underbidder at times as well. One auction in particular, I was the underbidder on every bid for 2 consecutive auctions, a total of 21 bids. I had a bidding war on a rare Thai coin at HA Europe that made the eventual winner pay 17 time estimate to win. I am sure he hates my guts. We took it from 180 Euros into four figures just by ourselves, no other competition. One day I will win one.
Yes, I have been outbid and in some cases crushed, and breathed a sigh of relief the next morning after bidding ended. I realized I had got auction fever a little (don't we all sometimes?), and that I really did not want the coin so much that I would pay over a market price for it.
It happened to me over 300 times last year. But/ I ended up winning 95 coins that I really wanted for reasonable prices. At the last Triton event/ my number one choice was this AV 1/6 Stater Satraps of Karia in not bad quality. However it went way over market value. So I ended up winning my second choice a AV Crown from Charles I . The lost coin hammered 4250 the one I won 2000
Yes, sometimes it's a relief to be outbid on a lot. Especially when you end up winning more lots than expected and are already looking at a large bill!
I found a couple of coins and am involved in my first auction. I’ll let you know if I get crushed either way.
