i know there are others that have pocket coins they always carry. after a while they start getting shiny like it was cleaned but it is just from being "circulated". if you were to send in a coin like this to get graded would they consider that as being cleaned even though technically it wasn't? will a grading service just see a shiny coin then mark it as cleaned or will they give it second thought? i am asking because i bought a nice seated quarter that has two different tones to it. so i got to thinking, could this coin could have been saved in a collection then during some hard times like the great depression get into circulation then get taken out a while later with some of its original tone worn off then start toning again? i hope this makes sense
Nooooo!!!!! Not another cleaning thread. But your coin was most likely toned, cleaned then toned again. Circulated coins tone too, just not as beautifully as a mint state coin.
maybe but that doesn't answer the question of if you had a pocket coin and felt like getting it graded will they consider it as cleaned even though every circulated coin at one time was shiny. and the seated quarter color looks like it was handled more then cleaned )but i know odds are it was) which is why i used that coin for an example
It is fairly easy to distinguish the difference between a coin that has a polished look due to circulation and a coin that has been cleaned or polished. When a coin goes through circulation, it will show brush marks in all directions randomly as opposed to a harshly cleaned coin that will usually show parallel rub marks. Just remember, not all cleaning is considered harmful to the coin and would be market acceptable and graded as such.
