Hello, Im new here, so please bare with me if im in the wrong location for this question. Im a cashier and I see coins all day and im used to seeing plenty of odd coins. For the last few months I have come across plenty of nickels , all shiny, good detail and the kind of silver color and shine you expect, but every single 1999 nickel I find is dull, no typical shine and flat gray, but has every bit of detail every other nickel has. Ive attempted to clean various 1999 nickels with vinegar, lemon juice, toothpaste and plain water, they all come out just as dull and gray as they were before though newly clean. What could the reason be, they arent ruined by acid, they are usually very decent looking just ordinary scratches and such. I would scan or take a pic of the coin but none of them show the dull look.
Without seeing what you are looking at it's hard to offer an explanation. But it sounds like you are seeing a bunch of dipped or harshly cleaned coins. If nothing else, based on what you say you are doing to them, they are most definitely harshly cleaned after you get done with them. There is nothing unusual or out of the ordinary about the '99 Jeffs, they look like all other Jeffs look.
Thanks GDJMSP, I tried both my 8mp camera and 2 scanners, I couldnt get the nickels to show how they look. both caused too much reflection. They may have been dipped by someone before I got them, but besides being less dirty they still had the same gray appearance that they had before cleaning so my cleaning didnt harm them. If they were dipped, it wouldnt explain why every 1999 nickel looks like that. Ill just choke it up to a chemical reaction or something, thanks though.
