I was going to ask about the shaved off
4 in the 1944. But with the close up, am
I the only one seeing double numbers in the
    1944 date?
And anyone want to comment on the rim?
    All comments welcomed :)
The bottom picture is what you
    see with a magnifying glass.

So what about the date? Is that doubling on the one and nine?

No. It is MD or DDD.

Machine doubling or die deterioration doubling.

So I went to a site and learned about mechanical doubling damage.
So this would be a mechanical double die insteadof a collectible "doubled die", is that correct?
    I searched the net for a 1944 DD/double die and didn't
find anything. Does that mean this coin was mechanically
doubled so much that's it isn't mentioned or, is this
a rare damaged coin, even if a mechanical DD and maybe
worth something to an error collector?

I think this is more die deterioration doubling (DDD) than MD. However, it could be a combination.

MD starts occurring as the die deteriorates and the die slips a little during the strike, thus causing doubling.

Die doubling is what is truly collectible because it is doubling caused by an actual double that is part of the die itself and not caused by the striking process.

If a market exists for a coin such as yours, it is very small.

    Try coppercoins.com
It is a pretty comprehensive site for Lincolns.

Anytime, I am sure with that info, you'll gain a good basic understanding, then it is just looking at a lot of coins.

    Also, lincolncentresource.com is good.
