Was the "Ike" dollar created just to have a coin to honor the deceased ?

    I sure think so !

Since they had to throw him on a coin or bill, they resurrected the large size dollar coin, that never was really used much except for maybe in the days of Bonanza.

you couldn't really evict any of these dudes from their coins/ bills, could you.... ?

    Lincoln
    Jeffy
    FDR
    Wash
    JFK

    Wash
    Jeff
    Lincoln
    Hammy
    Jackson
    Grant
Benny ( since he lost his half to JFK), the only one of these dead presidents/ statesmen to be decoined !

Maybe they could have put him on the $20 or $50, but they probably didn't want to "fuss" with changing the currency design by changing the President.

So where to put Ike.... " Let's bring back a coin wasn't liked because it was too big, even 100 years ago !

I'm surprised Reagan didn't get anything, like maybe knock off sacawagea ?

I'd like to see them bring back the Mercury dime design. Get FDR off there.

I don't think I'd want to see a clad Mercury dime in ulta-low relief, I'm sure it would get ruined. Same for a clad SLQ or WLH.

Personally, when Carter passes I think they should make a special peanut-shaped 4 cent coin with him on the front and an outline of Georgia on the back. But maybe that's just me.

I think they should stop putting dead presidents on coins all together. Put them on commems, and make circulating coins beautiful like they used to be with the many renderings of Lady Liberty....just my 2 cents

If reagan didn't get a coin, Carter has no chance !

I guess they could have put Reagan on the $2 bill since Jefferson would still have the nickel. That would probably have been a popular note. He must have at least got a stamp by now ?

Since they can use multiple reverses on a coin, I guess you could do multiple obverses as well, on a small insignificant coin. Maybe can Lincoln on the cent or alternate him with Nixon, LBJ, Carter ( in time) and whomever else leaving Lincoln on the $5 bill and taking him off of the coin that people throw away.

The average person is pretty dumb, though. Putting multiple obverses on a coin may confuse people. Look at the Presidential Dollars. Many people think they are tokens and don't take them seriously as legal tender.

that's why I say do it with the penny, people won't care if you put the queen of England on there, or Fidel Castro. Nixon or Carter ( once dead) on a throwaway coin would be appropriate, it's almost an insult to Lincoln to be on a coin that that people throw down sewers. I've actually made washers out of them.

You can't really bring back the beauty of stuff like a 21 Peace Dollar done in clad with no relief.

The dead Prez dollars fell flat.

Coinage itself will end long before it can be made artistic again. Remember a coin like a WLH was like better than an hour's pay ( lower wage people) in it's day, so it was like $10 today, They can't make something nice like a Buff nick with decent relief when they lose money just on the planchet.

    Hmmm.

Did the Soviet Union ever produce a coin with Breshnev or Khrushchev on them? Lenin?

    Just curious.

As for the Eisenhower Dollar, yes, it was produced to commemorate IKE in addition to his role in enabling the Moon Landing. WWII affected everybody and presented a global threat to the peace of the World. Through IKE's leadership, Hitlers War Machine was crushed and folks that actually lived during those horrible years did not forget the "Supreme Allied Commander".

As for Reagan? Nancy Reagan will not allow her husband to be on a coin while she is alive since her husband did not want it. Congress knows this.

As for other Presidents on our nations coinage, they really oughta get rid of all of them and get back to the priniciples the country was founded on. Namely Liberty.

Ike was well liked, but before my time ( born in 63). Kennedy was very popular and being assassinated in Nov 63, putting him on a coin was a natural since all the current coins were already ruined with dead presidents and Franklin.

The half was a viable and used coin in 1963, it had buying power, had to be worth $5 in today's dollars. So that was appropriate enough, even with a hastily thrown together design that was especially generic on the reverse.

Now, Ike was different. Bringing back the full size dollar in 71 because he died in 69 ( I think). That's iffy and wasteful, seems clear to me that a silver dollar sized wasn't needed since none had been minted since 1935, that's about like minting the dead prez dollars in the last few years...

Ikes are only just recently starting to carry a small premium, 40 years later. I could get them for face value from my local dealer until about 6 months ago, he now has a buyer at $1.20, will sell them to me for that as well...I would buy hundreds of them and spend them before.

So the JFK was fine at the time, but the IKE dollar was a waste ( IMO). I've seen some pretty well worn early 70 halves, so they circulated. Post bicentennial halves tend to be xf and better. I've never seen many Ikes that look very circulated, but I'd have no idea how to really tell a VF from an EF/AU besides luster.

Nice posts, but I agree with others that beautiful women as lady liberty ought to be put on our coins. If not in replacement of the obverse presidents and etc, why not the reverses instead of the other dribble that had come out on the quarter since about 2010.

They actually made the large size dollars for the slot machine trade as silver dollars were being removed to collectors and and we had to honor the guy who brought us the Interstate highway system back from Germany.

Breshnev or Khrushev no, but I do believe there is one with Lenin. More than one
    Y 139 1967 50 Kopeck
    Y 140 1967 one rouble
    Y 141 1970 one rouble
    Y 197 1985 one rouble

After Reagan death there was a movement to replace Roosevelt on the dime with Reagan. This was what Nancy objected to because Roosevelt was kind of a role model for Reagan, and he was originally a strong supporter of Roosevelt. Even though he later broke with him, he still highly respected him. After she object to putting him on the dime they did not suggest trying to replace Lincoln, Jefferson, Washington, or Kennedy. If Carter dies before mid 2014 I don't think Nancy will object to his being on the President dollar. She just didn't want him replacing one of the existing presidents.

Who wants Nixon on their coin? Not me!

I do! How cool to have the president everyone loves to hate on a coin. Additionally, Nixon has this comical look about his likeness. US coinage could use a bit of levity.

horse hockey ! They brought the dollar coin back because Ike croaked. It's not the mint's responsibility to make tokens for the casinos. I'll also argue that the casinos like to issue their chips/ checks/ tokens, or whatever you want to call them.

the casinos will gladly make a $1 metallic token or whatever and hope you take it home forever because it cost them maybe 25 cents. Vegas casinos did use Ikes in some slots ( after real silver dollars were gone), but tokens on the tables. Even better for them if you take home $5 and larger clay chips.

No way was the large dollar made for casino use.

well it's coming in the dead Prez series as I understand it, they still make a few million a year that they can sell to collectors and I'm sure what happens after Nixon , should Carter live to be like 120 years old ? Does Carter have to kick the bucket before Reagan gets his coin ?
