:loud: My wife is pregnant and as a result I will be losing my job (as a house husband, lol) later this fall, so I've been job searching the past few months and I decided to turn my hobby into my profession. I applied to a number of numismatic firms and as of yesterday I have been hired to work in the consignments department at Heritage Auction Galleries in Dallas! I'll literally see tens of thousands of coins every year and I am thrilled about the opportunity to improve my grading ability through finally being able to consistantly see tons of graded coins. Plus the folks i spoke with seemed really positive about the prospects for advancement into other numismatic positions as my skills develop! This is my foot in the door to advancing my numismatic goals and I couldn't be more excited. I will start sometime in the latter half of October, although the exact date hasn't been nailed down yet. I just couldn't sit on this any longer and I want to thank the members of this board who have been a great sounding board for me the last couple of years as I started actively trying to learn the ins and outs of coin collecting. Without the knowledge I've gained from you guys I definately wouldn't be doing this now!  Unfortunately, I will probably not be around as much after the move, but I'll still make it a point to visit as much as possible. I am definately addicted to this site and I can't imagine just checking out, lol.
Hey Chris So glad to hear this!!!....I looked into Heritage once and the guy I talked to really was nice---he wanted me to sign up for an internship <sp?> but I just couldn't at that time----I have a feeling that Heritage would be a great company to work for....maybe someday! I'll hold you to that This forum is just really growing here with people working at big names....Zane at PCGS and now you at Heritage. Since you will be working with consignments will you be going around the US buying?...that would be a dream job for any collector.... I think I'm right when I say that Heritage will let their workers collect?....if so you will get a good many chances to get some good coins I'm sure! BTW---Also Congratulations to you and the wife on the baby! I'm going to be a first time uncle here in about a month and I can't wait to find out if its a boy or girl....I guess either one will be just fine but I hoppppe its a boy so it will go hunting with me and learn about coins!! Speedy
Congrats on the baby and the job. Best of luck. What a great job, getting to look at and handle thousands of coins, without having to pay for them. Even if you can't keep them.
Congrats on both counts :high5: Sure hope you manage to keep on posting Chris - I for one truly enjoy your participation and comments here on CT. And even if ya can't post as often, stop by and keep us up to date on the family
Chris, First, congratulations on the baby on the way and your other upcoming job of being a dad!:hatch: There is nothing more rewarding than bringing a new life into this world, nuture that life and watch them grow and learn from patient guidance from a loving Father and Mother. Second, congratulations on your upcoming job with Heritage! You are the envy of myself and I am sure many others here on the forum, that could only dream of such a rewarding job! Please do visit us Po folk on the Coin Talk Forum when you can and if you can, give us a heads-up on any extremely rare coins that are headed to the auction block. Maybe you can get the head folks at Heritage to rethink their Insuring Policy on coins sent in for consignment or authentication. I know for a fact that several folks have consigned their' coins to Bowers & Merena because of Heritage's lack of any protection on their' coins. Good luck and take care! Frank
Thanks everyone for your kind works and congratulations. I am quite excited, as i'm sure you can tell! I will be a "consignment coordinator". The "consignment directors" go around and drum up consignments and then us coordinators take over the process. We do everything from picking up/receiving the consignment, to choosing the appropriate TPG to use, to deciding if the coins need to go to NCS first. Also I will be responsible for ongoing customer care (handling phone conversations with consignors who are checking up on their coins) and then assigning the coins to whichever particular auction they are appropriate for. They also told me that as my skills progress they are willing to move me into a junior grader position, so advancement in that area is a posibility. Heritage allows its employees to continue collecting (only half of my coworkers are coin enthusiasts) and they have a policy that if an employee is married then they have a permission form that the spouse must sign before the employee may purchase a coin from the company! lol My wife is thrilled, but I think I'm gonna have to find a traditional dealer in Dallas with fewer restrictions for my buying needs :hammer: Actually my wife is super and would probably sign any time I asked, assuming the money is in the budget. No worries there, I'm a Broncos fan and I can't see that changing! The worst part about living in Chicago (as opposed to Des Moines) is that I can't get any west coast football games (for some reason they think I care about Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and Pittsburg) so I miss watching the west coast games. That should improve some in Dallas.
I'll look into it, I know they have an employee suggestion system where they pay employees for new ideas and the better an idea is the more they pay. I hope they take it (the suggestion system) seriously (my coworkers acted like they do) because it sounds like a Dilbert cartoon waiting to happen, lol
Maybe. You're still moving to an NFC town. As an NFC fan (guess which team!) myself, I find it terribly annoying to live near an AFC town where the TV stations won't show an NFC team unless they're playing an AFC team. So I bought a certain "Ticket" on my satellite so I no longer have to worry about insular programming directors. I was even allowed to purchase this after my wife discovered she was pregnant with our first! And she still lets me buy coins too! Congrats to you and your wife!
Chris, I hope that Heritage will consider the suggestion as I know for a fact that they are losing business because of it! I also hope that they don't view suggestions as "stirring the pot" or "making trouble" as some Management folks often do when they are against change. I steered an older couple to Heritage earlier this year as they have (or probably now had) an authentic and high grade 1943 "Copper" Lincoln Cent that they wanted to sell. After they told me that Heritage does not Insure coins being sent to them for consignment or authentication, I had to recommend Bowers & Merena to them because they will Insure the coin(s) to the maximum determined value of the coin(s). Considering that the U.S. Postal Service only Insures for a mere few thousand dollars and Heritage offers none, then they had no other choice than to go with Bowers & Merena on a coin with a possible value of $140,000 to $180,000 if sold at auction. Thanks and again good luck! Frank
