Hi, I was robbed couple of months back and the guy took my whole collection of currencies and right after that a day or two later I setup some search engines on ebay to send me daily emails with postings of the similar items that were taken from me within 200 mile radius. i have a detective working on my case but he doesn't seem to be responding well to my emails and all.. What do you guys suggest I do, I found the notes couple of days back on ebay selling by one of the biggest coin and currency shop around here...

If you know of the notes location, contact the police directly and make a report, don't rely on an email. I probably won't use 911, but I am sure your police department has a nonemergency number. Or go personally to the PD with the evidence you have and show it to the "desk officer".

Go to the shop with your police report. Selling stolen goods is a crime. They likely did not know, but that will be your first step. If they do not respond favorably, call the police WHILE YOU ARE THERE and have an officer respond.

Again, they likely just bought them without knowing they were stolen, so give them a strong benefit of the doubt and the chance to do the right thing here. But if they say "finders keepers" or some BS like that, call the police right then and there. Any proof of ownership will also help, but the fact that currency is serialized and that you have a police report should be all you need to begin recovery.

Also, a coin and currency shop should keep records of whom they purchased from...

That's what I was thinking of doing first thing tomorrow morning and get all of this resolved.. at least i will be able to retrieve 30% of my collection... Problem with calling the PD is that the coins are selling in MD and the robbery case happened in DC.. Not sure how fast will they act on it to pick the stolen currency from the shop..

I'm not really sure if this helps. Maybe you can contact the seller via ebay or even report the auction on ebay. But the sooner you get a police report or something done the better.

Yeah I just don't wanna contact the seller yet before i talk to the detective working on the case as he might bring down the postings... Well I'll probably go to the police station tomorrow to give them all the printouts of the posting, atleast all my 500 and 1000 dollar bills will be returned.. will see where the gold and silver certificate collection shows up...

Just curious, are the notes certified or are they raw?

  9. Were they insured? Contact insurance company?

Please tell me that you have something that can prove the serial numbers are from the notes you had stolen from you. If you can/do, then getting them back will be so much simpler.

First, unless you scanned the notes in question it really is your word against the seller's.

Second, I would contact eBay and provide them with a copy of your police report about the stolen notes and they might be able to end the listing containing the notes in question.

Finally, I would take a screen shot of the listing page on eBay, print it out, and take to the detective who is investigating your theft.

To take a screen shot, press the

    prt scrn
    sys rq

key which is directly above the Insert key on your keyboard.

Open MS Paint from your Accessories folder, click the Edit button, then Paste. The image will appear on the Paint board. Click File, then Save. Open the file in your Windows Gallery, then click Print.

  12. You will need the Police Report and list of the Serial Numbers, but a photo of each note would do it for you. I don't know how coin collectors do it without serial numbers but if you have Photos that "you" have taken then you will have the serial numbers and will most likely get them back.

The unfortunate thing is, that unless a thief who has stolen certified coins is a complete and total moronic idiot, they would remove the coins from the holders thus removing the cert. # evidence.

If you can prove that they are really yours (i.e. identifiable pictures, insurance file, specific purchase receipts, or similar), you might try contacting eBay. They are surprisingly helpful on the phone most of the time. However, in the end, the police will finalize it.
