I'm rather new here, and I thought I would post a "fun read" thread: I walked into the bourse on Thursday to see several hundred tables set up directly in front of me and to the right. This intimidated me greatly, being my first large coin show. I walked my way straight to table 719 (David Lawrence Rare Coins) to see a coin I asked them to bring, but they weren't set up yet, minus a lone proof morgan in their case. As 719 was close to the museum showcase (if I recall correctly), I went there next. I spun around it a few times, and found the '13 V-nickel on display, which was the only reason I ran there next. Over the next 10 minutes, I wandered around looking at tables, until I found 1 that looked "warm" to me. I looked at their case, but they had mostly junk, silver dollars, and other things I know nothing about. I wasn't deterred though. I sifted through the junk boxes they had there, until I found 3 pieces worth buying, but nothing worthy of mention. Next dealer I bought the 4 new "S" quarters, but nothing else. At the third I found 2 1968-S cent rolls (original bank wrapped) that he sold to me for $1.50 for the pair. Considering that according to today the copper in them is about $2.39, I think it was a cute gimmick to buy, but as I was putting the change in my wallet I got interrupted as I was invited to lunch (Starbucks down the hall). After lunch, I bought something worth buying: an 1898 MS morgan for my '98 mint set. The reverse has a lot of "tractor" marks from the rims of other dollars, but for $45, it didn't matter to me because of the intense luster and originality. It was getting later in the day, and I hadn't bought anything for awhile, until I found some interesting errors. The first was a '20 merc with a die crack through the "1" in the date, and the second was a 95% off center nickel (modern)! I finally decided to break my $100 limit on a coin on this piece (what do ya'll think?) http://www.typecoins.com/store/product?pid=75212. I was more ready for day 2 than 1, although I only bought from junk boxes. To sum it up, I bought a VF 1898 & 1899 V-nickel, 4 George Washington 1st day of issue NGC slabs (3 Phili, 1 Denver) at $5 each (don't know why...), a record holding 1803 cent (oldest coin), and a problem free 1926-S G-6 merc (been looking for 1 of those). And I signed up for the Dallas coin club (impulse...). A good, but non-climactic second day. So, whatcha think?
Cool. Nice report! I live in Ft. Worth, close to Dallas, but I didn't go. It would have been cool to see that 1913 Liberty Head though.
FE21, I'm glad to hear you're interested in the Dallas Coin Club. I hope to meet you at a meeting soon.
