1896 $1 "Educational" note was being offered by a flea market vendor today in New Milford. He wanted $175 for it. I researched it and came back later, but it was gone1 It looked VG to Fine to me. He said it would have sold at $250 on ebay! That's a lot of ifs....
I didn't see any ifs in your post (except at the end). These usually sell for $100-$125 retail setting for G notes, maybe $185-$225 VG. I think $250 for a VG note is a HUGE stretch, but for a F grade note, that would be a reasonable expectation, with a retail price being around $400-$500 for a note in F+ condition.
Don't worry about it. One dollar Educational notes are not too pricey in low grades. Once it hits the VF condition mark thats when it gets expensive. But in good condition its actually a bit below his asking price.
My local coin shop is selling one for $150 and i'd guess it would grade a vg-8 or vg-10.So at this price and grade its pretty common and nothing to get excited about?I'd probadly be better off finding a grade in the Fine 12 to Fine 15 for about $250?
