I found this really nice bronze sestertius of Severus today. It is a large bronze coin, slightly larger than a US half dollar. What I like about it is the almost perfect centering of the strike. The portrait also has really fine detail. This one was struck in Rome in the year 227 AD.:smile
Nope...bought it as is. I set the lighting of the pic to accentuate the inscription and details but here is what it looks like in normal lighting.Fully brown.
Yes but it isn't nearly as nice as the obverse. It's P M TR P VI COS II P P S-C, Pax advancing left with olive branch & scepter. Cohen 320.
Severus Alexander: Nice coin. Sad story. He was only 13 when he came into power and 26 when he was murdered along with his mother by his own military. His mother, the redoubtable Julia Mamaea, really ran the Empire through her advisors. The usurper, Maximinus, was a disloyal commander who ordered both mother and young emperor slaughtered along with their advisors. They died together with the mother clutching her unfortunate emperor child to her breast. Very sad story...but very typical of the fates of the emperors during the "Third Century Crisis" of the Roman Empire. guy
Nice one! I am a big fan of Severus Alexander Sesterces, good centering indeed, looks nice! Do you have the weight? I am just curious, I bought a Severus Alexander coin shortly ago, as a Sestertius, turned out to be an AE As.... score! I really dig it, different bust style than yours, you can check out my Sev Alex Imperial Bronzes if you click the link on the bottom of my post and follow to 'Roman Imperial Bronzes' I haven't gotten into collecting provencial bronzes yet, and my later (late 3rd century onward) have their own folder..... anyhow nice addition!
