Referring to the Loon Dollar of Canada as the "Lucky Loonie" came about because, for good luck, an Edmonton icemaker (Trent Evans) embedded a loonie in the ice at dead center of the hockey rink before the 2002 Winter Olympic games. Both the Canadian men's and women's Olympic teams won gold medals. After revealing the placement of the loonie in the ice, the coin now resides in Toronto's Hockey Hall of Fame.

To keep the tradition going, in 2003, at the Grey Cup game, a graphics painter planted a loonie in the
Edmonton Eskimo's end zone and they beat Montreal to win the game.

In 2004, at the World Hockey Championships, someone hid a loonie in both nets at the Sazka Arena in Prague and Canada took the gold in that event.

Also, in 2004, a loonie was melted into the ice at Vancouver's GM Place and the Canucks went on a nine-game winning streak. Sadly, the fact became known, the coin was removed and the Canucks' winning streak ended.

The Toronto Rapters wanted some of that luck and taped a loonie onto their backboard just before their first win of the 2005-06 season.

All 2006 Olympic and Paraolympic athletes were presented mint state "Lucky Loonies" by the Royal Canadian Mint.
