there is probably already a thread for this, and if there is, sorry Although I'm new to coin Collecting, I've been saving pocket change for years. From what i've been reading in the forum since I've joined "rolls" are the way to go for the surprise effect, so I finally got off my butt....actually on my butt sitting for several hours going through my rolls (that I have rolled over the years) of .01 cents and dated each one looking for the usual stuff errors, DD, wheats, double ears wide and narrow A M etc. etc. and this is what i found out of 400 rolls 141 were over 10 years and upto 18 years old Wheats 1-1942 1-1946D 1-1955 1-1956D 1-1957D. lack of wheats due to, that I would usually catch them before rolling 28-1956 6-1959 22-1959D 25-1960D 6-1960 32-1961D 1-1961 33-1962D 6-1962 21-1963D 15-1963 63-1964D 49-1964 37-1966 54-1967 71-1968D 33-1968 93-1969D 18-1969 245-1982 lg dt 20-1982 sm dt 4-1968S 16-1969S 15-1970S 17-1971S 11-1972S 12-1973S 10-1974S 15-$.01 Candians, 9 that are round and 6 that have 12 flat sides on them, is there a significance to that? 4- Dimes Thought this might interest some of you, I know that alot of you are BIGTIME into this, and have probably have "been there and done that" what I have shared with you, but I'm a newb Can anybody tell me if the rest of my .01 cents are worth hanging onto due to they are talking (and have been for along time) about the possibility of stopping the cents? I really enjoy this web site and have asked a few ?'s and have always gotten straight forward answers, and I do appreciate that, and have taken advice to and buy a Red Book and a loupe (16 power) although my newest purchase was a light with a 8 inch circular neon light & 5 inch magnifying glass on a swing arm that clamps to the table (lets just say that after looking at the coins through the magni. for 5 hrs. then to look at them without, they look like dinky foreign change. lol) we also picked up a 50 to 400 power microscope. Both of which i purchased at yard sales for $20.00, but had to buy new bulb for $6.97 + tax Again thanks for all the info. John
Most cents other than the Wheats are worth just 1 cent----but it looks like you are off to a good start of working on a complete set of Cents...1909-date.... I would pick out the best and cash in the rest.... Good going on buying the Red Book---keep on buying books and you will learn tons! As for the loupe---that is a good one if you are interested in RPM's and varieties---I only use a 10x...and for grading I just use my eye! Speedy
John, you could also buy the Krause catalogues.Alternatively, you can look here; http://numismaster.com . Aidan.
Thanks Speedy I have several more wheats, they were just the ones I had found in in the 40,000+ cents that I had gone through this week John
Regarding the books, I've been disappointed in just about every coin book I've ever opened. Everything is either for beginners or advanced collectors. Regarding the loop, I'm glad someone else besides me can grade better without one. It's frequently more confusing than helpful. I probably just don't know what I'm supposed to be looking at.
Posted by Cloudsweeper99: regarding the loop.... I find it a real pain to use because of how I have to hold the light, My microscope works much easier
A couple of comments John, get yourself a 5x loupe. It's much easier to use and see with and has a much larger viewing surface. And you should use incandescent light when viewing coins - not fluorescent.
Yeah---that is the case in most of the books---but most of the time I'm only buying books on topics that I'm researching or needing info on so when that happens I need both the beginner and advanced info--- I find it easier----I want a 5x or 4x like GDJMSP suggests but haven't found one yet I like---when looking at keydates and higher grade coins I use the loop more than normal. Speedy
Partial list of what Grandma gave me (1) 1879 Morgan, (1) 1882 M, (1) 1885 M, (1) 1888 M, (2) 1889 M, (1) 1900 M, (2) 1921 M, (1)1922 Peace dollar, (2) 1925 P d, (1) 1935 P d.,some are in pretty good shape She also gave me several more coins, but haven't itemized yet, when I do I'll post
Remember to thank your grandma. That is very very generous of her. You should ask her where they came from. There might be an interesting story behind them.
John, all those coins, pre 82, are copper. I also am a roll searcher and have found out that I can get more money then a cent for them. I have advertised them and have found out people really do want them. I would keep all AU ones and sell or store the rest
Canadian cents were 12 sided from 1982 to 1991. The only coin worth anything in the bunch is 1985 with a pointed 5.
