So since I have decided to go through all my Grandfather's coins and figure out what I have, I know have coins on the brain. The previous innocent change sitting in small piles here and there I am now pulled to like a magnet towards metal to search for dates and see if there is anything special. Found a 1949 nickel, 1977 nickel and a 1964 penny. Not huge finds but still thought it was cool among all the 2000+ dates of the other coins. And I suppose the two nickel's in melt are worth more than 5 cents right? They don't look in fabulous condition or anything so I am guessing that is all they would be worth unless putting in a coin book or something for the date.
Ok, actually after looking again at things it looks like nickel's need to be pre 1945 to be worth anything. Like I said totally new at this.
That's not entirely accurate. Though date is a factor in value, so are condition, rarity, variety, Mint error, etc. There are post-45 Jeffersons that have a high value to them. For instance, the 1949 D over S mint mark, in a BU grade(MS60), has a value at $155, and the MS67 is around $4000(numismedia.com values).
:welcome:........ Its cool there is nothing more we like then new members who are seeking to learn about this great hobby.....
