The 9 is a partial or weak strike,the D is out of place and so is the star after the D i added a photo of the 2009 P Dollar to show correct placement.
The coins probably slipped slightly when it went through the edge lettering machine. I think this is a fairly common anomaly.
I have been through 125 rolls of mix dollars and never seen a edge error like this. I found a local bank that has mix dollars.

Yes the edge is shifted because the coin slipped in the edge lettering machine. As mentioned it isn't that unusual.
Have you seen the D in pos. *B* spot a lot in dollar coins? I just started looking at dollars this year maybe someone who's been through a lot of dollars can tell me if this is common or rare thing like the article is saying.
Well I don't know that I qualify but I have been through about 25,000 rolls. I put them right back in the rolls when I come across them, how many have I seen? I dunno but I know what causes the anomaly and it doesn't interest me and is not something that people are collecting in general. NOW, I do watch for double edge and smooth edge. We have found that there are actually different fonts used on the edge of dollar coins as well. Especially in the Adams. ( which I have seen more than my share of ) if you would like to see the font changes I believe Ken Potter put some information on his website somewhere about them. He might have even wrote up the dollars your referring to, I dont recall if we have discussed this or not.
I'm not a big fan of these dollars and the edge lettering i like the Ike dollars better, if this type of error is common than this coin will be spending change.
That's the bottom line. No bids and it was only starting at $19.99. Dollar errors are rare and they have to be really good or nobody pays attention to them. :thumb:
