HeY Guys I Have a 1889 Morgan Dollar That My Grandma Gave me....I Tried to Google it....but the price varies ..it does have the CC on the back for Carson City...My Question is..How would i go about getting the coin graded and does anyone know the approx value of a coin of this stature?
Assuming the coin is determined to be genuine, and that it is a problem free example, and slabbed by NGC or PCGS, I would expect it would be worth somewhere between $6,000-$8000. If it is determined to be a problem coin, then that would drop to probably $2,000-$3000. As for getting it graded & slabbed, probably the simplest way for you would be to have a dealer send it in for you.
IF it is genuine, that is the second best date in the Morgan series, and potentially quite valuable. It needs to be graded and that can be done by either PCGS or NGC. Do you have a dealer who can do that for you that you trust, if you are not a member of either grading service? It could be worth anywhere from a low of about $2000 to a high of $6000 IF IT IS NOT A FAKE. That call needs to be done by one of the grading services to see if it is a damaged coin, a graded coin, and if it is genuine.
Well i took it to a Gentlemen who Sells Coins at a local Flea MArket. He measured with Calipers, and weighed it and offered me $2,000....knowing i didnt know what the coin was. I then told him that im going to hang on to it....and he told me i made a right choice..that the coin would bring me alot of money.....This is the reason i posted it on here......
Don't sell it for $2000 until you have a grading service authenticate it, and possibly slab it. $2000 would be MINIMUM for that date, as a damaged, ungradable coin. Do you have a dealer that can submit it to either grading service in your area?
Im actually going to say it is authentic. I have seen quite a few fakes of this date & although the sufaces appear to me to have been messed with I see a few PUP's that lead me to believe that is is a VAM-2 . Like all the rest have said ,get it certified to be sure. J-
Nope, I Have Tried Everwhere. The only Places are Gold and Silver Shops Who want to buy it for its Weight. And i dont want to send Something of this value as well as sentimental off in the Mail to somewhere i know nothing about. I guess i'll Stick it in a Shoebox somewhere. P.S. i Have no idead what PUPS or VAM-2 Means...i tried to google it...no luck. Thanks Guys. i appreciate your Help.:thumb:
Send it to one of our trusted members, the ones who have been here years, and that have an account at PCGS or NGC, have them get it graded and you pay them back plus a small amount for there time, mabye Doug has an account, hese been with us for 10 yrs, or Peter, the sites founder
Sorry , a PUP is an abbreviation for Pick Up Points . Spots where to look on a coin to determine its die pairing from when it was struck . Being able to track down the die paring by these marks helps with my assumption that this piece is authentic . Most all replicas or counterfeits do not have these certain attributes & this one is an easier coin to match up given the lower mintage & consequentially less die parings . The VAM is the name/number assigned to those die parings in the Morgan & Peace Dollar series.
