I picked up a high grade example of this coin today and am a bit confused by the mintage numbers in Krause. For more than half of the series (1860-1866), there is simply a mintage of 387,000 followed by 'included above' over and over again.

So, were the mint records that spotty? Was there a silver order filled in 1860, and no other bullion purchased until later?

Oh, and here's something oddball I found with a coin similar to mine (if you can ignore the solder butchery that was done to it):

Hey George. Mintage figures are not known from 1861 to around 1875 for multiple types. Your edition of Krause probably has an editing error where they put "included above" instead of a dash. The Krause books are infamous for glaring errors. Worst one I know of is a picture of a 1940's-50's coin pictured for a 1700's coin.

So, you're saying that the mintage for 1863 might be much higher than Krause suggests? Do we have any Brazilian experts who have some idea about the relative scarcity of dates in this series?

The 1863 one is actually one of the dates I see more commonly. Would assume there were more minted.
