I just found my second 1798 large cent in two weeks! Again, I am returning this to the land owner. He is in his 80s and his family has owned the farm I found it on for nearly 200 years. Any help with the variety would be very much appreciated - thank you!

I would literally chit my britches if I dug something from the 18th century out of the ground.

Nice find! Yet again. I don't have any way to attribute it unfortunately I don't own any of the greens catalogs but I know alot of the members here do. I'm sure someone will chime in soon :)

    Lettering Type 2

    Hair Type ?

    Group 2, 3 or 5.

8 distant from 9. Eliminate the overdates of Group 2.

1 distant from lowest curl. Eliminates Group 3.

Obverse 21 Yep Both distant 1 and distant 8.

Reverse R has a spiked C(E). Nope and leaf under R(I) covers wreath branch, also nope.

Reverse S always seen with both the Spiked C and die crack from E through fraction. Nope

Reverse T has blunted C and die chips from E(D) through leaf under O(F). While light, they are there.

It appears to be an early die state of S-167.

Interestingly enough, a similar S-167 with even less visible evidence of the die chips was the only coin I ever sent to Bob Grellman for identification.

It reminds me that lack of evidence is not evidence of lack, particularly on these old coppers.
