Another find from my Grandfathers collection. He started collecting in the 1940's and this coin was in a very, old and nasty 2x2. There was an odd looking residue (not PVC) on the coin which I removed with VERDI-CARE™....it came right off to reveal a very beautiful coin. The luster on this one is off the charts. Grandpa had a great habbit of stashing away coins he got in change, especially when they were nice. Another interesting thing he did was keep almost every single Buffalo nickel he found. We found rolls and rolls of them, mostly F-VF avg circ. Mostly just common date stuff, but cool nonetheless. Let me have some grade opinions. In the last photo I put the coin next to an average 1963 I found in his hoard.
My grandfather also collected every Buffalo that he could find. Today, I have nearly eight thousand of them. As for the quarter, it does have very nice luster, probably the result of fresh dies. Looks like an above average example of a MS-64.
thats a nas coin you got there. PS. my great grandfather also horded coins, left my mom with a bag full of morgan silver dollars, silver dimes, a buffalo nickel, and a ton of other stuff, left e with a 1944 copper penny a 1961 silver half, (vf condition) a 1976 2 dollar bill, a 1976 ike dollar (not silver) and a 1945 gold plated (at least i think) penny,(it is magnetic) i also found a buffalo nickel in my pocket change, unknown date (though i can make out the 19 so its 19 somthen')
That image doesn't leave much to the imagination save for some luster which I'm sure, is far better in hand. There's a couple small hits on the cheek which wouldn't be visible without magnification. I grade it 65. Why did you use a circulated coin as a comparison and did you take a photo of the coin before it was treated?
Actually, the other coin is MS too. No "before" VC photos, but it ugly....I think the residue actually protected the surfaces in this case. All that was left after conservation was the toning on the obverse.
I have some rolls of 69 mint set quarters that are absolutely disgusting with "residue." There are a few that might grade 64 or 65 if i could get rid of it. May try experimenting with verdi- care to see what can be done.
