I was just wondering when did the San Francisco mint stop producing coins for circulation?

    1980 for SBA's. 1974 for cents, and 1970 for nickels. '54 -halfs. '54 quarters. '55 dimes.

They've made other dates but they carried no mint marks or weren't issued for circulation.

    Are 1970s Nickels worth saving?

Thank you cladkind for your response. I have one more question... did the San Francisco mint produce wheat cents for circulation in 1956,57 & 58? I've never seen any wheat cents of the years I just gave that have the S mint mark.

No they did not. The last S wheatie was in '55.

    It's a good collector coin.

This date was saved in fairly substantial but not large numbers. There were a couple million
issued in mint sets but most of these have been destroyed or put into circulation. This coin
is hardly scarce but really nicely struck coins in XF or better are not overly common. MS-60's
up to typical MS-63's are cheap. There may be fewer than a couple million in unc and gems
are scarce while Full Step coins are very scarce.

My mon has a 5 gal. water jug full of nothing but nickels from the early 1950's. guess I should get a book somewhere and learn what to look for. Might be something of interest in all those coins, but I doubt it!

Most of these were saved in large numbers in rolls and bags but quality is usually horrendous. Nice well made pieces (especially S mint) are desirable even in circulated condition. MS-60's are even more common than for coins dated in the '70's and '80's.

There are also numerous varieties among the early '50's issues including OMM's and RPM's. Some are quite scarce.
