Howdy all, I've had this since I was about 8 or so (32 now) and just now took it out of the plastic it has been in since then. Just curious what you all think this is graded as? Thanks. It looks like a scratch under the "of" in the pic but can't seem to see it with naked eye. Lighting isn't probably the best also.
Looks like it may have been polished or plated. The fingerprint kills the value too, IMHO. But anyway, :welcome: to CoinTalk!
I beg to differ. This cent does not look re-processed IMHO. As far as fingerprints, NGC or PCGS will slab MS-65s with fingerprints, so I don't know if I'd say they kill the value because a slabbed MS-65 will bring $20 or so the surest way to know if it's been re-processed is to look at the edge of the coin but re-processed steelies in my experience have always had a kind of bluish tint which I don't see on this coin
Well, if PCGS were to slab a coin with fingerprint residue that thick, I'd certainly be surprised. Once the oils eat through the metal, then the value will be destroyed, along with any chance of it getting into a slab (not that the OP ever planned to submit the coin for grading). Just voicing my opinion here, Mike.
Not sure this effects anything you think you might see, but I took the picture with a 1:1 macro lens so it might show more detail than most pictures as you might tell from the small depth of field. I didn't use a tripod or good lighting as I just took a quick pic.
