Hey all, I'm looking to pick up some obsoletes, but this is my first venture into unknown territory. I really like the following three notes - two South Carolina and a Hagerstown note. However, I have no reference guide and I'm hoping to get a little advice about the value of these notes in uncirculated condition. Thanks a ton!
The SC notes are pretty common, but there is a story behind that. Some corrupt officials in the government in the state authorised and ordered the notes, but without the sanction of the rest of the government apparently. They were delivered but then invalidated. The 1873 issues were authorised by all in the state government and are now very rare. The value on those notes is about $40-50. The Hagerstown notes are remainders, there are even whole sheets of them. They must have done a very large print run and then not used too many of the notes. The notes are from the late 1850s and early 1860s and the value is about the same as the SC notes. They are very pretty notes and I want to buy a set of the SC notes in the future.
Q. David Bowers' book "Obsolete Paper Money" is the ultimate reference on these notes. http://www.amazon.com/Obsolete-Issued-United-1782-1866-ebook/dp/B00917H9N4
Am I mistaken, or are canceled obsoletes more valuable that not-canceled notes? I am referring to numbered/signed notes - not remainders.
