    I
like the look a lot. I think knowing that the PCGS Price Guide has these auctioning in PCGS for around $1100 and NGC's are anywhere from $600-$930 for Untoned examples, I think I paid a fair price of $820 for a toned San Diego. This will be my first ever of this coin and what a way to start, NGC MS67. Not sure what I plan to do with it (sell or keep) but I thought i'd show you all it tonight in case any of you were the under bidders ;)

Nice snag, but I'd pass on the price......and the hair splitting. I'm happy to own one for a much lesser price.

Please tell me your source! :) jk

Edit: Where are you guys finding these inexpensive MS67 San Diego's? It sounds like I am not privy to the good sources here lol

Is it just me, or is a real nice Antietam a better option than a 67 San Diego?? Or even a 66 Gettysburg.

I think in terms of historical value, the Antieam holds more weight, but in terms of design, I love the San Diego. I've always had a thing for Roman culture and I happen to like the resemblance on the obverse of it more than General Lee and George McClellan. Also really like the subtle color on the obverse on this one, I'm happy with it! Sorry some of you don't seem to be fans.

Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful coin. If you don't mind me asking, if you're a huge fan of the coin, historical context in relation to Roman Culture, and the eye appeal/grade, then why so quick to decide if you want to hold on to it or sell it like you had mentioned in your original post?

Well, because I do sell, and if I happen to list it on eBay, I would hate to be criticized for it. I am a collector and a dealer. I love the coin though.

San Diego is on my list of must-haves. Simply beautiful. That and the Grant, Texas, and Pan-Pac. I've already got the stone mountain :)

I think what he means is that you could pick up a nice (lower mintage) commem for that kind of money. San Diego is by no means a rare coin and nice examples can be found for much less than what the OP paid. I do understand that some folks have to have the 'best of the best' but the 'coin slob' in me says 'nay'.......:)

Thanks for posting the beautiful San Diego.

Mine is graded MS65 in an old PCGS rattler holder. Here is a thread describing mine. I found it at FUN in January 2012.

Here is a link to my new Hawaii commemorative if you care to guess the grade. http://www.cointalk.com/t214771/
