Does anyone have any ideas what may have happened to this penny? 1955D Penny Full View.jpg 1955D Close Up.jpg

It's been handled. I can tell by the finger prints.

Looks to me like die cracks in the date.

All my pennies have been handled in some form or another. Since I'm new to the world of coins, is this a common issue I've checked up with many sites about the 1955 double strike coins, but this issue lies in with the die itself, yes?

    In my opinion, yes.

The fingerprint thing was an attempt at levity.

Looks mashed. If so, I would say PMD.

Regarding 1955, I think there is 1 or 2 other less famous primary DD varieties, however, they do not exhibit the degree of doubling as the more famous one. Also, it is almost certain that all of the "famous" 1955 DD's are accounted for. But, there is still wishing. The other day, I found an interestingly doubled 1955, but it was not "the one."
