I like my coins and I hate marketing gimmicks. Why on Earth would I mix the two willingly? Thanks, but no thanks...
I'm not much of a slab guy, but I like the black insert a lot better than the cheesy white or horrible blueish clear insertless ones. But, I'd rather eat birdcage newspaper than pay to have an ASE or modern dollar slabbed. Too bad they aren't offering it for real coins. Guy
No. They do not look black. I'd guess that they are a very deep green. Back in the 60's, I had a noce pair of black glasses frames. After many years of use and wear, I could clearly see that they were not black but a very deep red. Black, in actuality, is the absence of color and as such is very difficult to achieve which plastics. The alternative is usually a very deep blue, green, or red. Of all the pictures and scans I've seen of these "black" inserts, the more convinced I am that they are in fact a deep green. The lettering on the label is black.
I will pick up one on the secondary market just so I have an example of the holder. They really aren't that "retro" though. Compared to the original black NGC the outer shell is different, the label is completely different, the hologram is completely different (in fact the original black slab didn't even have a hologram.), the inner insert is a different style. The only similarity to the original black holder is that it is black, and it isn't even the same shade of "black". So it is a "retro" holder that is completely different from the original.
