This is in my possession thanks to my Mom. I was attempting this "grading" thing and wanted you all's opinion...that is...guide me through this and explain if you will your conclusion to the grade you would give him. Now as for me...I think it would be in the high VF to EF-40. I conclude this assessment because I see all of the letters in LIBERTY (the Y however is "hidden" if you will by the "black"). There is wear on the hair and cheekbone and on the leaf tips in the wreath so it can't possibly be higher than AU. I wouldn't go AU because of the other damage to the coin (the scratches on the obverse/black on both obverse/reverse). SO I THINK EF'ish. I'm also concerned that a previous owner might have tried cleaning the coin...just doen't "look right"...which reduces the grade further, right? Thanks for chiming in on this one! Karen
F details, abrasively cleaned. Probably a net G. All of the letters of LIBERTY are visible, but some of them are very weak etc. Heavy wear on the obverse laurel wreath, Liberty's eye, reverse laurel wreath is insufficiently sharp.
i personally think it is a metal detecting find that was very dirty and somebody cleaned it. i think it would grade a lower to mid vf, but because of its cleaning it pretty much destroys most numismatic value.
