I bought this recently for my collection and I'm going to my coin shop today to get this slabbed by PCGS. This is my first time getting a coin graded, so I'm pretty excited! My coin shop saw it the day I bought it and said it would be a DMPL MS63. What do you think it will grade? Thank you for any input:D!

You might get a surprise and find it is not a DMPL by TPG standards. It looks definitely like a 63, but DMPL requires a specific amount of reflectivity with 8-10 pt (small type) at a 8" distance. I would not be surprised to see it grade PL and not DMPL. Hard to say.

It does appear to have exceptional luster.

If you take a ruler and lay it flat on a desk or table, then hold the coin on it's edge next to the end of the ruler. You should be able to read 6 inches in the reflection of the fields both sides, and that's the criteria from PCGS for DMPL. 2-4 inches is PL.

They are using 8" now. It used to be 6" for DMPL.

I'm not sure this coin hasn't been "enhanced" It could be the picture...

    It looks strange to me.

It might go DMPL or at least PL. I say it's 64.

interesting contrast, the frost is almost perfectly even but instead of flashing blast silver it looks like an even gray/white, still it looks like a MS-64 (PL??)

I think you are right. Looks like a photoshop enhancement, unless the coin really looks like that in hand.

I meant one of the polished up DMPL's that were floating around in the 80's...

I had no idea they graded off reflection , that's cool. I bought this coin for 20 bucks, so I figure even if its PL I'm still sitting good. I talked to my coin shop just now and he said that he has another coin just like mine that would be submitted in the the same batch, obviously if I do that, we make note of all distinct marks on the coin. However , do you think its a good idea to submit two of the same coin in one batch? (sorry if thats a dumb question..just new to getting coins graded.) The only picture editing I did was crop the picture.. I would never photoshop a coin and post it , especially when I'm looking for accurate and honest comments regarding the coin. Thanks again for the comments:D!

For $20 I would be suprised if it isn't fake~ Not saying it looks fake... but $20 for an MS CC Morgan? Where did you get it?

They don't grade off the reflection, they assess the PL and DMPL designation off the reflection.

    The grading is entirely different.

See now everyone will be suspicious.

No way you could find a CC Morgan looking that good for no 20 bucks.

Let's see what numismedia.com says a retail for a CC, no PL or DMPL, in 63, 64, 65 grade:

    MS63 1883 CC - $252
    MS64 1883 CC - $288
    MS65 1883 CC - $494

yea I did buy it for $20:D, from a non-collector who just wants to get rid of all his coins to someone who collects (along with ALOT of junk silver which I also bought). So I took it in that day to my LCS to see if they could tell me if it's real or fake.( I felt the same way as you guys did, "too good to be true") The first guy I showed it to was amazed at the deal I got and showed it to a few of the other 'top dogs' in the store. ALL of them identified it to be real. By the way, this coin shop has the best reputation in the area I live in , not to mention I've been doing business with them for 4 years now without ever being let-down or mis-informed. Also, I just dropped it off, its getting submitted to PCGS and should have it back in about a month. So I'll keep you guys informed and updated on this thread. Good deals are out there ,I'm in a business that allows me to interact with alot of different people that have alot of money and I always mention to people that I buy old coins and I always get screaming deals:thumb: !

Also, you only pay retail prices if you purchase in a retail enviroment (coin shops/shows/websites) .If your looking for a purchase below retail , you have to make it known to people that you BUY coins. Not every good deal in life will be in a glass case all ready for you to buy, you have to hunt for it !

It appears that I can see the camera and part of your hand in the reflection on the coin, maybe my mind is just playing tricks on me.

I believe this is a fake, or the coin is. It is insulting to the mentality that somebody would sell a potential $300-500 coin for $20, unless you swindled the poor person. Either way, something is rotten in the State of Denmark. :)
